IMO correct answer is C.
Only C and D are correct due to characterized by idiom and meaning is distorted in D

Isn't D also clear in conveying the meaning?
It attempted to form a coherent and consistent meaning of the thought. Can you elaborate on why D is wrong?

E. Korean Buddhism, which began approximately 800 years after the death of Buddha, is characterized in attempting to form a coherent and consistent form of thought and understanding

Approach -

1) Eliminate B, are(plural) with singular subject is incorrect.
2) Eliminate D, changes meaning "consistent understanding of thought"
3) Eliminate E, characterized in is incorrect.
4)Eliminate A, characterized for is incorrect
