Lake Turbulence is known to be one of the cleanest fresh water lakes in Central Asia with an incredible biodiversity. However, proposal for construction of a crude oil pipeline across the lake's bottom to reach a refinery is raising widespread concerns in the international media that it might pollute the lake and cause irreversible ecological damage. However, a new pipeline technology is being installed which would alert the lake authority and seal leaks instantly. Therefore, provided this technology is effective, there is no basis for the media concerns.

The argument depends on assuming which of the following?

A. There is no reason to believe that the leak-preventing technology would be ineffective when installed in the pipeline in Lake Turbulence.

B. Apart from the threat of a leak, pipeline's construction would pose no other pollution issue to the lake.

C. Other than the pipeline project, there will be no new industrial development around the lake that will pollute its waters.

D. Ecological Damage to the lake would be the only harm that a pipeline leak would cause.

E. The biodiversity of Lake Turbulence is the same as the nearby lake Constance.

However, a new pipeline technology is being installed which would alert the lake authority and seal leaks instantly. Therefore, provided this technology is effective, there is no basis for the media concerns.

So if leak detection technology is safe then what will weaken media concerns i.e. there will not be harm to lake in any other ways.

B. Apart from the threat of a leak, pipeline's construction would pose no other pollution issue to the lake.

B matches our pre-thinking.

Ans B)

Premise

The proposal for construction of a crude oil pipeline across the lake's bottom to reach a refinery is raising widespread concerns in the international media that it might pollute the lake and cause irreversible ecological damage. A new pipeline technology is being installed which would alert the lake authority and seal leaks instantly.

Conclusion

If the new technology is effective, there is NO basis for the media concerns

Assumption

Bridges the gap between the conclusion and the premise in the context of the information provided.

The argument depends on assuming which of the following?

A. There is no reason to believe that the leak-preventing technology would be ineffective when installed in the pipeline in Lake Turbulence.
The gap between the conclusion and the premise is hardly bridged by this answer choice.

B. Apart from the threat of a leak, pipeline's construction would pose no other pollution issue to the lake.
If this is assumed to be true, we can virtually guarantee that the lake would NEVER get polluted by the pipeline - not even during its construction. The only answer choice which bridges the gap between the conclusion and the premise sufficiently and effectively.

C. Other than the pipeline project, there will be no new industrial development around the lake that will pollute its waters.
Out of scope as this cannot be an assumption if one claims the above-mentioned conclusion.

D. Ecological Damage to the lake would be the only harm that a pipeline leak would cause.
Assuming the ecological damage is the only harm the pipeline would cause is beyond the scope of the question. The argument itself is only concerned with ecological damage in all respects.

E. The biodiversity of Lake Turbulence is the same as the nearby Lake Constance.
Neither the passage nor the answer choice provides any evidence whether Lake Constance had been polluted by a similar pipeline or not. It may have similar biodiversity, sure. Insufficient to pick as a correct assumption to reach the above-mentioned conclusion.

I'm open to criticism, kindly let me know if my reasoning is flawed.

Hope this helps! :-)
Some Kudos?
