Last summer Google awarded $1 million to professors involved with digital humanities research, and last year the National Endowment for the Humanities spent $2 million on digital projects.

A. awarded $1 million to professors involved with digital humanities research, and last year the National Endowment for the Humanities spent $2 million on - CORRECT
B. awarded $1 million for professors involved in digital humanities research, and last year the National Endowment for the Humanities spent $2 million for - the preposition "for" does not go with "spent"
C. had awarded $1 million to professors involved with digital humanities research, and last year the National Endowment for the Humanities spent $2 million on - use of past perfect tense is wrong because there is no progression between the two events
D. awarded $1 million to professors involved with digital humanities research, but last year the National Endowment for the Humanities spent $2 million for - the conjunction "but" is wrong because there is no contrast between the two events, also the preposition "for" is wrong
E. awarded $1 million to professors involved with digital humanities research, whereas last year the National Endowment for the Humanities was spending $2 million on - - the conjunction "whereas" is wrong because there is no contrast between the two events

Involved with vs Involved in

Both are correct. Where to use which one depends.
Take this example :

1) Jane is involved in a relationship, with Ron.
or
2) Jane is involved with Ron, in a relationship.

Applying the same rule here,

1) Last year Google awarded professors involved in digital humanities research with 1 million dollars

2) Last year Google awarded 1 million dollars to professors involved with digital humanities research.

Both are correct.

Hope it helps. Kudos please! :-D

1. There is no contrast ---> D with "but" is out.
2. There is no need in past perfect, because there is no action in the past before any other action in the past ---> C is out.
3. In E there is strange mix of past simple and past continuous - it does not sound right. Simply not right ---> E is out.
4. The first thing in B I mentioned is "spend for", it has to be "spend on" ---> B is out.

A sounds a little strange to me. But there are no mistakes.

I was thinking there is contrast

Quote:
Google awarded $1 million to professors involved with digital humanities research

Quote:
National Endowment for the Humanities spent $2 million on digital projects.

but there is no contrast because project by google is digital as usual-digital humanities research

Official Explanation

Concepts Tested – Usage, Idiom, Tense
A - Correct Answer
B – ‗awarded for‘ is unidiomatic, the correct idiom is ‗awarded to‘. ‗involved in‘ is unidiomatic, go with ‗involved with‘ instead. ‗spent on‘ and not ‗for‘.
C - Use of past perfect tense ‗had‘ is incorrect since there are no two things taking place at different times in the past.
D - The use of ‗but‘ is incorrect since no contrast is being implied in the sentence
E - The use of ‗whereas‘ is incorrect since no contrast is being implied in the sentence. Avoid the continuous tense ‗was spending‘
