Last year, in order to reduce its operating expenses, a law firm’s management decided to adopt a new policy in which the lawyers would work from their homes for 2 out of 5 workdays per week. According to the management, this step should have decreased the firm’s expenditures on electricity, water, parking, and food. The yearly expense report showed that the operating expenses had been reduced significantly.

Which of the following, if true, most weakens the firm management’s confidence that the reduction of operating expenses resulted from the implementation of the new policy?

A. The relative part the operating expenses out of all of the expenditures of the firm was considered to be average.

B. During the past year, the firm moved to new offices in a modern building that allows natural lighting and regulates internal temperatures.

C. Many lawyers found working from home more challenging than they had expected.

D. The total number of working hours paid for by the firm to its employees grew by 5 percent after the implementation of the new policy.

E. Some of the lawyers asked to increase their home-working days from 2 to 3, and the management approved most of these requests.

Imo B.

B. During the past year, the firm moved to new offices in a modern building that allows natural lighting and regulates internal temperatures.

If B is true it gives one reason to believe that moving of office from old to new building was the reason for lower expenses and not the policy.

Correct me if i am wrong.

A. The relative part the operating expenses out of all of the expenditures of the firm was considered to be average.(even if avg was considered, expenses came down significantly)

B. During the past year, the firm moved to new offices in a modern building that allows natural lighting and regulates internal temperatures.(may be considered)

C. Many lawyers found working from home more challenging than they had expected.(even after challenges they have been working)

D. The total number of working hours paid for by the firm to its employees grew by 5 percent after the implementation of the new policy.(positive sign productivity has gone up)

E. Some of the lawyers asked to increase their home-working days from 2 to 3, and the management approved most of these requests.

(No bearing on cost)

B is potential option.moving to new office is the reason for reduction in operating expenses.

Thanks

A. The relative part the operating expenses out of all of the expenditures of the firm was considered to be average. - Irrelevent

B. During the past year, the firm moved to new offices in a modern building that allows natural lighting and regulates internal temperatures. - correct (giving alternate reason)

C. Many lawyers found working from home more challenging than they had expected. - Out of scope

D. The total number of working hours paid for by the firm to its employees grew by 5 percent after the implementation of the new policy. - Even if company started paying more after the implementation , we have a yearly report that suggests that the expenditure cost has decreased. So we are still not able to answer this.

E. Some of the lawyers asked to increase their home-working days from 2 to 3, and the management approved most of these requests. - out of scope

Official Explanation:

We’re looking for an answer which shows that something other than the new policy caused the drop in expenses. Answer choice (B) gives us just that – an alternative reason for the decrease in operating expenses.

Premise : Last year, in order to reduce its operating expenses, a law firm’s management decided to adopt a new policy in which the lawyers would work from their homes for 2 out of 5 workdays per week.
Premise : The yearly expense report showed that the operating expenses had been reduced significantly.
Conclusion : According to the management, this step should have decreased the firm’s expenditures on electricity, water, parking, and food.

A. The relative part the operating expenses out of all of the expenditures of the firm was considered to be average.
Doesn't make any useful contribution to weaken the conclusion.

B. During the past year, the firm moved to new offices in a modern building that allows natural lighting and regulates internal temperatures.
Since the new office where company moved in past year has natural lighting and regulates internal temperature, so this is an alternate reason for the reduction of operating expenses.

C. Many lawyers found working from home more challenging than they had expected.
Out of scope.

D. The total number of working hours paid for by the firm to its employees grew by 5 percent after the implementation of the new policy.
If the payment increases, operating expense will increase. This is against the premise itself. Irrelevant

E. Some of the lawyers asked to increase their home-working days from 2 to 3, and the management approved most of these requests.
Out of scope.
