SPLIT1) "X ROSE ALMOST AS FAST AS Y" IS THE CORRECT IDIOM FOR THIS COMPARISON. A, B AND C ARE OUT.

SPLIT2) PARALLEL SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION. "LAND VALUES IN THE PINELANDS" (X) MUST BE COMPARED WITH AN EQUIVALENT PRONOUN "THOSE" THAT CORRECTLY REPLACES LAND VALUES (Y). A AND E IS OUT.

SPLIT3) WHY E IS OUT? THE COMPARISON IS BETWEEN LAND PRICES. WHEN YOU USE "THOSE" YOU ARE CORRECTLY CONNECTING TO "THE LAND VALUES". WHEN YOU USE "WHAT THEY DID" IT MEANS COMPARING AN ACTION (THEY DID) VS. THE VALUE OF LAND. E )"WHAT THEY DID" IS CONFUSING AT BEST. IT IS NOT PARALLEL IN THIS SENTENCES. E IS OUT. ALSO, YOU CAN PUT A COMMA AFTER THE WORD "THAN" => AS FAST AS, AND IN SOME PARTS EVEN FASTER THAN, WHAT THEY DID ....I WOULD THINK THE INFORMATION WITHIN THE COMMAS ",AND IN SOME PARTS EVEN FASTER THAN," PLAY THE ROLE OF APPOSITIVE PHRASE. SO IF WE EXCLUDE THE PREPOSITIONS AND OTHER NOISE WE HAVE "LAST YEAR, LAND VALUES ROSE ALMOST AS FAST AS WHAT THEY DID OUTSIDE THE PINELANDS" THIS ANSWER IS WRONG BECAUSE THE COMPARISON BETWEEN PRICES IS BROKEN. E IS OUT.

This question test on as.. as format of the sentence.

(A) so fast, and in some parts even faster than what they did ---------- "What they did" ambiguous.
(B) so fast, and in some parts even faster than, those ------------------ "so fast" not correct
(C) as fast, and in some parts even faster than, those ------------------- "as fast" is again not correct. as fast as shall be mentioned.
(D) as fast as, and in some parts even faster than, those ---------------- Correct use of as fast as and "those" correctly refers to land
(E) as fast as, and in some parts even faster than what they did ---------- Correct use of as fast as but "what they did" not correct.

Last year, land values in most parts of the pinelands rose almost so fast. and in some parts even faster than what they did outside the pinelands.

(A) so fast, and in some parts even faster than what they did - use of so fast - idiom error , parallelism error - land values is a noun phrase and what they did is a clause ;
the phrase in some parts even fast .. faster should be followed by comma
(B) so fast, and in some parts even faster than, those - Parallelism issue in both X and Y
(C) as fast, and in some parts even faster than, those - Idiom error - as fast
(D) as fast as, and in some parts even faster than, those - Correct
(E) as fast as, and in some parts even faster than what they did - parallelism error - land values is a noun phrase and what they did is a clause ; the phrase in some parts even fast .. faster should be followed by comma

Answer D
