Last year the worldwide paper industry used over twice as much fresh pulp (pulp made directly from raw plant fibers) as recycled pulp (pulp made from wastepaper). A paper industry analyst has projected that by 2010 the industry will use at least as much recycled pulp annually as it does fresh pulp, while using a greater quantity of fresh pulp than it did last year.

If the information above is correct and the analyst's projections prove to be accurate, which of the following projections must also be accurate.

A. In 2010 the paper industry will use at least twice as much recycled pulp as it did last year

B. In 2010 the paper industry will use at least twice as much total pulp as it did last year.

C. In 2010 the paper industry will produce more paper from a given amount of pulp than it did last year.

D. As compared with last year, in 2010 the paper industry will make more paper that contains only recycled pulp.

E. As compared with last year, in 2010 the paper industry will make less paper that contains only fresh pulp.

Do you think it would make more sense to look at this question mathematically?

Lets discuss it first

Hi,

Let's use numbers to understand the passage.

Last year,
Recycled Pulp used: 100 units
Fresh Pulp used: more than 200 units. For our discussion, let's take it to be 210.

In 2010,
Fresh Pulp used: 220 (greater than last year)
Recycled Pulp: more than 220 (at least equal to fresh pulp in 2010)

So, as we can see, clearly option A is the answer choice.

Choice B does not hold in the numbers we used.

Hope this helps

Let me know in case any clarification is required.

I disagree I feel it should be A

2009 FP-200 RP 100 TP=300
2010 FP-220 RP-220 TP=440

B need not be true

Lets discuss it first

IMO: A.

Last year, amount of fresh pulp is twice that of recycled pulp.
Company says that it will use recycled pulp in the same amount as that of fresh pulp.
Company is not reducing amount of fresh pulp used.So to comply with the above condition, company needs to double the usage of recycled pulp at least.

For example,
Given, Last year, Company used
Recycled pulp used= 1 K tons (Lets' say)
Fresh pulp used =>2 K tons.

In 2010, Company will use at least as much recycled pulp annually as it does fresh pulp, while using a greater quantity of fresh pulp than it did last year.

So, Keeping the amount of fresh >= 2 K tons, Amount of recycled pulp needs to be at least doubled to reach at the level of fresh pulp.

Only Option A makes sense with this analysis.

OA is A

This is such a good example of a CR question that requires a little bit of Math.

Current proportion- PULP:RECYCLE = 2:1

Future Proportion- PULP:RECYCLE = 1:1

One additional caveat-the amount of pulp used in the future is more than the current amount used. In summary, The PULP/RECYCLE proportion will be different in the future, and the ACTUAL amount of pulp will increase too.

So the argument presents 3 conditions that need to be satisfied.

1. The current proportion is 2:1
2. The future proportion will be 1:1
3. The future amount of Pulp will be greater than the Current amount of Pulp.

Next I plugged in numbers

Condition 1

PULP=100
RECYCLE=50

100/50= 2/1

Condition 2 and 3

Future

101/101= 1/1

101>100

This satisfies all the conditions presented in the argument.

I think it is pretty straight forward. Please clarify your reasoning for choosing B, and for eliminating A.

OFS. Strong word "only".

TO choose between A & B. i assume no.'s as mentioned in above post and got A as IMO

Hi mahendru

You can eliminate D and E quite quickly because they're out of scope.

D. As compared with last year, in 2010 the paper industry will make more paper that contains only recycled pulp.
E. As compared with last year, in 2010 the paper industry will make less paper that contains only fresh pulp.

The argument only talks about how much fresh pulp and recycled pulp are used to produce paper in general. The argument does not say anything about types of paper such as 100% fresh pulp paper or 50-50 fresh-recycled paper, etc.

Thus, D and E are out.

Hope it helps.

I do not think any given option is correct for this question . Others(B,C,D,E) all know why are incorrect while A is incorrect as the option says

In 2010 the paper industry will use at least twice as much recycled pulp as it did last year. The word atleast allows the possibility of equality but actually according to the information provided paper industry will definitely use more than twice the recycled pulp it used last year.

Hello,
My problem with the question is this:
What if the current year in the question is some 2005 but not 2010?

If that happens, last year will be 2004 and the OA A will not hold true.

only A and D are left, D is out because of "contains only", this is too extreme, and also, test takers cannot make any deduction from information in the passage.

The question is a special type of question. The only way to understand this kind of question is to read every word in the question carefully => question type: inference, no negative words, question stem is normal
