Like ants, termites have an elaborate social structure in which a few individuals reproduce and the rest are serving the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, building the nest, or they battle intruders.

Analysis: This sentence is testing parallelism in two places,
- Responsibilities of individuals in social structure i.e. reproduce and serve

***** Thanks from all to underline the tested part of the sentence... I did it for u, Fig :) *****

This question is testing parallelism/parallel structure. The original structure of the sentence incorrectly uses the present progressive form (serve instead of are serving). Secondly, all the verbs, well really participles, should be consistent with each other.

Thus
"E"

A. are serving the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, building the nest, or they battle
There are two issues in this one. First are serving is not parallel to reproduce.
Also, there an issue in the last element of the list. If we remove all of the elements but the last we get the following, which does not work.
are serving the colony ... by they battle

B. are serving the colony in that they tend juveniles, gather food, build the nest, or battle
In this one, the use of in that distorts the meaning, causing the sentence to convey not that certain individuals serve the colony by doing certain things but instead that they can be said to serve the colony because they do certain things.
Also, once again, are serving is not parallel to reproduce.

C. serve the colony, tending juveniles, gathering food, building the nest, or by battling
In the version created using this one, the rest serve the colony, tending, ... incorrectly conveys that the individuals who reproduce do not serve the colony.
Also, prepositional modifier by battling is not parallel to participle or verb-ing modifiers tending, gathering and building.

D. serve the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, by building the nest, or by battling
gathering is not parallel to by tending, by building and by battling. Alternatively one could say that the use of by before building and battling makes the sentence needlessly wordy.

E. serve the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, building the nest, or battling
In the version created using this one, the meaning is clearly and correctly conveyed via the use of logically constructed parallel lists.
The correct answer is E.

Like ants, termites have an elaborate social structure in which a few individuals reproduce and the rest are serving the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, building the nest, or they battle intruders.
Meaning:
The sentence starts off by talking about some similarity between ants and termites. The similarity is that both (ants and termites) have some structure in which a few individuals do something and something. (list)
Things to check:
1) Meaning
2) Subject verb agreement
3) Modifiers
4) Parallelism
5) Pronoun
6) Verb tense
Evaluating:
1) Subject verb:
a) Termites……….have
b) Individuals………..reproduce
c) Rest…………are serving,……… (Here is the first error: The sentence is in simple present tense because/as/since its talking about a fact. Then why not simple past? Because the fact is true/relevant even today).
2) Parallelism
Common markers are and(list), or, other idioms. Here is the second error: the list after rest serve the colony by…….. is not parallel. Why is they they battle not the third verb? Because/since/as it comes after the parallelism marker ‘or’ and the ‘and’ before the rest shows the list contains only two things.

3) Verb tense error has already been discussed in point 1.

A. are serving the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, building the nest, or they battle
INCORRECT
B. are serving the colony in that they tend juveniles, gather food, build the nest, or battle
INCORRECT
C. serve the colony, tending juveniles, gathering food, building the nest, or by battling
INCORRECT. List is not parallel (A,B,C,or by D)
D. serve the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, by building the nest, or by battling
INCORRECT
E. serve the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, building the nest, or battling
CORRECT

D. serve the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, by building the nest, or by battling
E. serve the colony by tending juveniles, gathering food, building the nest, or battling

I understand the answer options and the logic behind correct answer.
Below is my question:

In option B, is use of that correct? are serving the colony in that they tend juveniles, gather food, build the nest, or battle
or use of which correct i.e. are serving the colony in which they tend juveniles, gather food, build the nest, or battle

Experts, please reply

prep can not be followed by "that"

If I am not wrong, 'that' can come after a preposition because prepositions must be followed by noun/pronoun (that is a pronoun).
