"Substitute for "is the idiom, thus A,C,D are straight out; Between B& D D is awkward construction. Please post your explanations

"Substitute for" is the correct idiom. Between B and D, B is the right answer.

Hi Rohit,
The correct idiomatic usage of substitute is - substitute x for y
Therefore eliminate A, C, E
D is incorrect as it should have "emphasizes" instead of the incorrect usage of 'emphasis is' which should be followed by 'on' rather than 'that'

Hope this helps.

Consider kudos for the post

Also in D "Ms. Burton’s emphasis" is not comparable/parallel to "the educators"

It's a Idiom question. (substitute x for y)

I think it is easy question and not a 700 level for sure.

Straight B.

Idiom is substitute for. A, C and E out.
Like other educators, Ms. Burton, not her emphasis. D out.

(A) to dull “basal readers,” Ms. Burton emphasizes how important it is to enjoy
(B) for dull “basal readers,” Ms. Burton emphasizes the importance of enjoying
(C) to dull “basal readers,” Ms. Burton emphasizes that it is important to enjoy
(D) for dull “basal readers,” Ms. Burton’s emphasis is that it is important to enjoy
(E) to dull “basal readers,” Ms. Burton’s emphasis is on the importance of enjoying

2-3 Split
D & E are out since the modifier , like other educators...should modify Ms Burton
Between A,B,C..."substitute for" seems to be the correct usage.

Correct answer must be (B) , I have 3 pointers here -

1. Like X , Y

Like other educators who prefer to substitute anthologies of short stories or collections of popular essays for dull “basal readers,” , Ms. Burton emphasizes the importance of enjoying good literature.

2. Substitute X for Y

Like other educators who prefer to substitute anthologies of short stories or collections of popular essays for dull “basal readers, , Ms. Burton emphasizes the importance of enjoying good literature.

3. Importance of something...

Like other educators who prefer to substitute anthologies of short stories or collections of popular essays for dull “basal readers,” , Ms. Burton emphasizes the importance of enjoying good literature.

Hence , I would like to go with (B) happily :-D
