subjunctive usage required, thus, eliminate A and D.
like must be followed by a noun entity, thus eliminate B and C
E is gramatically as well as logically correct and thus, is the correct choice.

Option C is wrong:

General Serrail was an architect of war like other French generals of the time were, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, he demanded that the Greek army demobilize

here like is followed by a clause .

like is used to compare 2 elements and it should always be followed by a noun not cluase

Like other French generals of the time, General Serrail was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army demobilizes.

A. Like other French generals of the time, General Serrail was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army demobilizes. - 'Command' is a subjunctive word and hence it required bare/simple/first form of verb after that.
B. Like other French generals of the time were, General Serrail was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army demobilize. - Like compares nouns.
C. General Serrail was an architect of war like other French generals of the time were, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, he demanded that the Greek army demobilize. Same as B
D. General Serrail, like other French generals of the time, was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army was demobilizing. - Same as A
E. General Serrail, like other French generals of the time, was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army demobilize. - Correct

Kudos please... :)

In the option E, the subject is missing in the last part of the sentence. The sentence goes like "was an architect of war, and In 1916 demanded that the greek .....". Shouldn't there be a subject before the second part of sentence ?

Any experts view on this ? daagh

Thanks.

Hi,

If "As" were used in option B, would it be correct?

A. Like other French generals of the time, General Serrail was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army demobilizes

B. Like other French generals of the time were, General Serrail was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army demobilize

C. General Serrail was an architect of war like other French generals of the time were, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, he demanded that the Greek army demobilize

D. General Serrail, like other French generals of the time, was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army was demobilizing

E. General Serrail, like other French generals of the time, was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army demobilize

The sentence here test 2 issues -

1. Use of correct idiomatic usage - X like Y
2. Use of subjunctive - Trigger word + Verb + that Subject + Subjunctive word

Now check the options -

None but sentence (E) addresses these issues correctly

General Serrail, like other French generals of the time, was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army demobiliz

General Serrail, like other French generals

General Serrail, like other French generals of the time, was an architect of war, and in 1916, in a move to further the control of the central powers over the Balkans, demanded that the Greek army demobilize

General Serrail, demanded that the Greek army demobilize

Other options can be rejected if you use the technique of eliminating the middle words the answer can be reached quickly -

(A). Like other French generals of the time, demanded that the Greek army demobilizes

(B) Like other French generals of the time were, demanded that the Greek army demobilize.

(C) General Serrail was an architect of war like other French generals of the time were, he demanded that the Greek army demobilize.

(D) General Serrail demanded that the Greek army was demobilizing.

(E) General Serrail, demanded that the Greek army demobilize.

Hence IMHO (E)
:-D

When words like demanded, insisted and requested are there in a sentence, the following verb takes simple present.
Hence "E" .....Ankitkumar

Not simple present actually..... Option A already has simple present - "the Greek army demobilizes". The verb should be in its raw form - "the Greek army demobilize".

"Like" is used to modify noun/s or pronoun/s. B and C are out. "DEMAND is a command subjunctive so we need base form of verb i.e. "demobilize"
A and D are out.

Hence (E)

"Were" highlighted in red makes it a clause and by rule "like" can not modify a clause

shouldn't it be 'demobilizes', as we are talking about a singular Greek army?
