(A) I think the 'sandpipers', having already been mentioned with respect to fields and pastures, needs some qualification as in choice B to make the sentence more clear.
(B) Best Choice
(C) awkward construction
(D & E) Verb 'are' or 'is' is missing

Although I've marked B, I am not sure if my logic is sound. Could you please suggest how B is correct. :)

'B' is the correct choice - The sentence properly compares the bird itself to grassy fields and old pastures. Also, "is vanishing" as the verb strengthens the sentence by making the comparison clearer. Overall, I was confused at first, but I suggest ROE method that will lead you to the right choice.

Like the grassy fields and old pastures that the upland sandpiper needs for feeding and nesting when it returns in May after wintering in the Argentine Pampas, the sandpipers vanishing in the northeastern United States is a result of residential and industrial development and of changes in farming practices.

(A) the sandpipers vanishing in the northeastern United States is a result of residential and industrial development and of changes in
- "sandpipers vanishing" = incorrect. "sandpipers vanish" or "the sandpipers are vanishing"

(B) the bird itself is vanishing in the northeastern United States as a result of residential and industrial development and of changes in
- correct as is

(C) that the birds themselves are vanishing in the northeastern United States is due to residential and industrial development and changes to
- "that the birds ..." = incorrect. also, "birds" should be "bird" to be // to "upland sandpiper" which is not underlined. also, "changes to" should be "changes in", changes meaning of sentence

(D) in the northeastern United States, sandpipers' vanishing due to residential and industrial development and to changes in
- same as "A"

(E) in the northeastern United States, the sandpipers' vanishing, a result of residential and industrial development and changing
- same as "A"

key idea here is "sandpipers vanishing" makes no sense. need a helping verb "is/are", and since "the upland sandpiper" is NOT underlined, you're kind of guided to the idea that you need a singular helping verb/verb to form an agreement.

Kudos please if you find this helpful :)

(A) the sandpipers vanishing in the northeastern United States is a result of residential and industrial development and of changes in--- wrong because we are comparing a noun 'fields' with a participle sandpipers 'vanishing'; Vanishing here is a present participle and not a gerund as many might be tempted to believe.

(B) the bird itself is vanishing in the northeastern United States as a result of residential and industrial development and of changes in -- The comparison is correct here with a noun-to-noun

(C) that the birds themselves are vanishing in the northeastern United States is due to residential and industrial development and changes to -- The prepositional modifier starting with 'like' should modify the noun 'bird' after the comma. The intrusion of 'that' renders the modification faulty.

(D) In the northeastern United States, sandpipers' vanishing due to residential and industrial development and to changes in --- an outright fragment

(E) in the northeastern United States, the sandpipers' vanishing, a result of residential and industrial development and changing-- yet another fragment as in D

Hello Experts,

Option C also 2 verbs in the same sentence i.e. "are vanishing" and "is" . Isn't that one more reason to eliminate option C?

Quote:
that the birds themselves are vanishing in the northeastern United States is due to residential and industrial development and changes to
