I will go with D.

Reason: All the statements which begin with "Lincoln, discovering/discovered" has one primal flaw. The modifier present is a non-essential modifier and it should modify the subject (i.e) Lincoln. To do so it must begin with "who"

Ex:

Lincoln, who discovered in young manhood the secret that the Yankee peddler had learned before him, knew how to use a good story to generate good will.

Thus the options A,C and E can be eliminated.

In the option B there is no flow in the described events (This could have been achieved by using "had learned before him" instead of "has learned before him").

Hence D.

Thanks.
