Can someone please suggest in option D- which is the main verb-- im not understanding the meaning of legacy to succeeding mesoamerican societies.

Hello Praka,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, the main verb phrase in Option D is "is...being explored", and the meaning here is that Olmec culture is now being explored by historians because of its legacy to succeeding Mesoamerican societies, meaning how it influenced the Mesoamerican societies that came after it.

We hope this helps
All the best!

Hi experts, I realize that you are not supposed to rewrite GMAT answers to see if they would be correct because the correct answer is always the correct answer :)

However, would the following be correct?
"the more ancient Olmec culture is now being explored by historians for the legacy that it had on succeeding Mesoamerican societies"

My ear desperately wanted to change the correct answer to this.

Many thanks!

(A) historians are now exploring the more ancient Olmec culture for the legacy it had for succeeding Mesoamerican societies

(B) historians’ exploration is now of the more ancient Olmec culture's legacy to the Mesoamerican societies succeeding them

(C) the legacy of the more ancient Olmec culture to the Mesoamerican societies that succeeded them is what historians are now exploring

(D) the more ancient Olmec culture is now being explored by historians for its legacy to succeeding Mesoamerican societies

(E) the Olmec culture is more ancient and had a legacy to succeeding Mesoamerican societies that historians are now exploring

E can be simply eliminated by understanding the use of restrictive modifier “that”. It appears to incorrectly modify Mesoamerican socities. This gives the meaning that the historians are now exploring the mesoamerican societies instead of the olmec culture.
