(B) managers function most effectively when they have
(C) management functions most effectively when they have
(D) managers function most effectively when they have received
(E) management functions most effectively when it has

Why is 'E' wrong here? Management is singular and as such it fits the bill!!!! Inputs please!

A = Sub verb disagreement
B = Correct
C = 'they' has no antecedent
D = 'Received' unimpeded communication does not make sense
E = 'Management' can not undergo training, managers can!

we can remove A and C straight away because A says Management function but it should be singular. so functions.
C says when they. now coming to D, when they have received which adds an extra word.
Coming to B and E, B refers to people - Low level managers whereas E refers to a complete Cadre.
Please explain this part

Hi,

Can I say that "I have thorough training in something"?

Thanks!

Look carefully. In "D", managers are receiving training but what about unimpeded communication. Managers cant receive unimpeded communication.
Actually Managers should have training and communication with blah blah....

I hope this clears your doubt

- I think...if you consider this as complete cadre and referring to single entity in first part of the sentence then you can not say communication with "one another" in last part.

the important thing here is to read the whole sentence, and not make decisions based on only what is underlined.

Lower-level management function most effectively when they have thorough training and unimpeded communication with workers, supervisors, and one another.

(A) management function most effectively when they have - SV-agreement error. management functions
(B) managers function most effectively when they have - hold to it
(C) management functions most effectively when they have - pronoun they refers to singular noun management. incorrect.
(D) managers function most effectively when they have received - although it looks good, present perfect here is not needed. the sentence talks about general fact.
(E) management functions most effectively when it has = looks good..but wait..in the non-underlined portion, we have communication with... an one another. on this account, this answer choice is incorrect.

Decider was last one another, otherwise we cannot decide what is wrong with all answer choices. I have read somewhere in the forums 700 level questions are more from intentions not grammar.

Hi,

I arrived at Option B as the final choice.
The method i adopted was: It's the managers who have to communicate with the workers and they are to be trained. The action has to be performed by a doer and in this the doers are the managers.

A - we need managers here, because notice the last non underlined part "one another", thus we need manager and not management.
B - correct
C - same reason as A. out
D - thorough training and impeded communication - both are noun clauses. We do not need verb received, impeded is an adjective.
E - same as A. out

Okay,
Seen this question after a long time again and got the answer very quickly.

At the end of the sentence is "one another".

Management - One another ; does not suit at all.
Managers - One another; Yep

Now we got managers in place, then we get function because subject is plural.

Now
managers have thorough unimpeded communication,
managers have received thorough unimpeded communication,

First sounds absolutely correct coz it conveys the perfect meaning and is short and sweet.

GO for B

(A) management function most effectively when they have
(B) managers function most effectively when they have
(C) management functions most effectively when they have
(D) managers function most effectively when they have received have received cannot refer back to unimpeded communication
(E) management functions most effectively when it has tough one: it doesn't concur with one another at the end

Cheers
