M: It is almost impossible to find a person between the ages of 85 and 90 who primarily uses the left hand.
Q: Seventy to ninety years ago, however, children were punished for using their left hands to eat or to write and were forced to use their right hands.
QтАЩs response serves to counter any use by M of the evidence about 85 to 90 year olds in supports of which one of the following hypotheses?
(A) Being born right-handed confers a survival advantage.
(B) Societal attitudes toward handedness differ at different times.
(C) Forcing a person to switch from a preferred hand is harmless.
(D) Handedness is a product of both genetic predisposition and social pressures.
(E) Physical habits learned in school often persist in old age.

As the question is regarding countering Q's response the ans is A.
Had it been supporting Q's response the ans would have been E.

A seems to be the best answer.

Good Answer. Almost impossible to find a person between the ages of 85 and 90 years of age using left hands because almost 70 to 90 years ago, punishments were metted out to people who tried using the left hand to eat or write. Which meant that born right handed would mean easier survival

(B) Societal attitudes toward handedness differ at different times.

(C) Forcing a person to switch from a preferred hand is harmless.
Irrelevant

(D) Handedness is a product of both genetic predisposition and social pressures.
Out of Scope. Does not talk about genetic predisposition....

(E) Physical habits learned in school often persist in old age.
goes against what Q is saying. This statement would mean that it would be easy to find an 85 or a 90 year old.

Question:

QтАЩs response serves to counter any use by M of the evidence about 85 to 90 year olds in supports of which one of the following hypotheses?

M is using evidence about 85 to 90 to say that right handed people have survival advantage. He is saying that indirectly. When M said that he can't find left handed people in that age group, he is hinting that lefties don't live long enough and right handed people have survival advantage.

Simply said, the question asks us to find out what M is hinting at.

why not "B"????
Because "B" seems to have the bigger picture of M's view.

Hi Sourav,

You are correct in as much as B does give a wider picture of what M says.

HOWEVER that is not what the question asks. What the questions is asking, is for what Q is saying. What does this PREVENT M from extrapolating from his point about 85-90yr olds.

B does not do that, as infact Q's point would help M with that argument. What Q does is prevent M from arguing A, so that is the correct answer.

DEAR PLUMBER250,
PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG.....

Q gives a reason why persons aged 85-90 use right hand..... in their childhood they were punished for using left hands.....
If this responce has to counter any use by M of the evidence about 85 to 90 year olds----- M should have been proposing a different hypothesis for use of right hand by persons 85 to 90 year old. only D GIVES THAT alternate reason/ hypothesis...... GENETIC PREDISPOSITION AND SOCIAL PRESSURE------CONTRARY TO PUNISHMENT AS ADVOCATED BY Q....

Should'nt D be right then...?

(A) Being born right-handed confers a survival advantage. May be right if we presume that people used right hand as it gives survival advantage.....
(B) Societal attitudes toward handedness differ at different times. IRRELEVANT
(C) Forcing a person to switch from a preferred hand is harmless. IRRELEVANT
(D) Handedness is a product of both genetic predisposition and social pressures. CORRECT ANS
(E) Physical habits learned in school often persist in old age. incorrect... instead of being contradictory.... it is in line with Q's statement....
