Official Solution:

If a ring is formed by the inner circle of radius 2 and the outer circle of radius 3, what is the ratio of the area of the ring to that of the inner circle?

A. 1:2
B. 2:3
C. 3:4
D. 5:4
E. 8:5

The area of the inner circle \(= \pi*2^2 = 4\pi\). The area of the ring \(= 9\pi - 4\pi = 5\pi\). The required ratio \(= \frac{5\pi}{4\pi} = \frac{5}{4}\).

Answer: D

Can anyone please explain why we subtracted 9π- 4π if we wanted to find the total area of the ring? Shouldn't we be adding these two to find the total area which is the inner circle plus the outer circle?
