I agree with E
D is both too choppy and it is not clear whether "making it" refers to Madagascar or the fact that it underwent human settlement.

My god! I eliminated E as soon as I saw 'because' in the beginning.
(I read some where that it is not good practice to start a sentence with because).
So now I know I must be careful.

I fell for this trap. Totally agree with E.
In D, 'making it'....'it' is pointing to what? ( as pointed by Paul).

They author wants to convey that BECAUSE Madagascar was the last one to undergo settlement, it is ideal for research.

Have a look at D
(D) Madagascar, one of the last habitable areas of the earth, underwent human settlement, making it

This implies that Madagascar is ideal for research because of the human settlement alone - there is no emphasis on the "last" part.
