Mainframe computing was the cornerstone of computing and was used for all sorts of tasks from military control to word processing. It had proven to be cost-effective, efficient, and fit for most tasks. However, 20 years back, personal computing took the computing world by storm and has now replaced mainframe computing in all walks of life, enjoying the same success that mainframe computing once did.

Based on the sequence of events above, which of the following can be properly concluded?

A. Technological innovations have a history of disrupting dominant market force and replacing it with the next wave.

B. Every computing technology, however successful and cost-effective, will eventually be disrupted

C. It is not necessary that a computing technology that has been a dominant force in one era will continue to dominate the computing landscape forever.

D. A dominant technology has a higher chance of being disrupted than a technology that is not as dominant.

E. In the technology world, if an emerging technology is to gain a foothold, it must disrupt a dominant technology.

Technological innovations have a history of disrupting dominant market force and replacing it with the next wave.

Understand the choice
A. Technological innovations have a recurring pattern of replacing big force in the market with the next generation force.
Analyze in the context of the passage and Question Stem
The passage merely presents us one instance in which technological innovation has replaced the then dominant market force.
Just on the basis of one example, we cannot conclude that technological innovations have a history of doing the same.
So, this statement is not supported by the passage.

B. Every computing technology, however successful and cost-effective, will eventually be disrupted.

Understand the choice
Any computing technology – irrespective of its success or cost-effectiveness – will eventually be replaced by something else.
Analyze in the context of the passage and Question Stem
The passage merely presents us one instance in which a computing technology has been disrupted.
Just on the basis of one example, we cannot conclude that the same is applicable for every computing technology.
So, this statement is not supported by the passage.
It is not necessary that a computing technology that has been a dominant force in one era will continue to dominate the computing landscape forever.

Understand the choice
C. A dominant computing technology of one era may not continue to dominate the field of computing forever.
Analyze in context of the passage
The passage does provide us an example of a computing technology (Mainframe Computing) that was dominant in a certain period but ceased to be dominant 20 years back.
Hence this option is supported by the passage.

D. A dominant technology has a higher chance of being disrupted than a technology that is not as dominant.

Understand the choice
A dominant technology has a higher chance of getting displaced than a not-so-dominant technology.
Analyze in context of the passage
The passage merely presents us one instance in which a computing technology has been disrupted.
It does not present any comparison.
The passage also does not provide us any information regarding the ease of disruption vis a vis the dominance of the technology.
Hence this statement is not supported by the passage.

E. In the technology world, if an emerging technology is to gain a foothold, it must disrupt a dominant technology.

Understand the choice
If a new and up-coming technology needs to establish itself, it needs to displace an existing dominant technology.
Analyze in context of the passage
The passage merely presents us one instance in which a new technology (Personal Computing) has disrupted a dominant one (Mainframe Computing).
This one example is not sufficient to say that this is how new technologies establish themselves.
Hence this statement is not supported by the passage.
