C,

And also is wrong, cut the fluff a lot of prepositional phrases are there in the sentence.

You can read it as

the British Empire's colonial policy was manifested in the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America,
the island of Hong Kong,
the bulk of the Indian subcontinent,
and the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa,

--separate list of element starts here
and
in the occupation of Egypt in northern Africa.

Here each part is parallel to the other and the lists are correctly separated by use of and.

Re: Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter [#permalink]
A.Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and

B.Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and also

C.In the latter half of the second millennium, the British Empire's colonial policy was manifested in the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, and the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and in

D.In the latter half of the second millennium, manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and

E.In the latter half of the second millennium, manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and also

Only C actually finishes the list of all the places that were settled before talking about an occupation by the British Empire. It also maintains parallelism with the settlement and the occupation (nouns). All others are incomplete and wrong--mostly for not completing the list of settlements.

Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and the occupation of Egypt in northern Africa.

Sentence can be written as:
Manifestations led to the
Main list item 1: settlement of the
Sub-list: eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent and the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa,
Main list item 2: And occupation of Egypt in northern Africa

A. Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and - and is required before 'the cape of......' to separate the lists. 'Latter half.....millennium' seems to modify Policy instead of manifestations.

B. Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and also - Same as A. 'Also' is redundant.

C. In the latter half of the second millennium, the British Empire's colonial policy was manifested in the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, and the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and in - Correct. Manifested in A and in B. Lists are distinguished and Parallelism is maintained. modifier is placed correctly.

D. In the latter half of the second millennium, manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and - Same as A however modifier error is corrected.

E. In the latter half of the second millennium, manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and also - Same as A however modifier error is corrected. Also is redundant.

More deep analysis is appreciated........ :)

Below is my reasoning:

Apply the concept of parallelism to arrive at the right answer.
The meaning of the question is more important.

This implies that the manifestations led to the occurrence of two consequences : settlement and occupation. There is a sublist in the first consequence: different colonies in North America, Hongkong, Indian Subcontinent and the Cape of Good Hope.
Since the sublist has more than 2 items, "and" is needed before the final item. Since the list is huge, it is better to separate the sublist and the second item with a comma, followed by "and" to complete the main list (which has 2 items - consequences).

A.Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and - No and before the last item in the first consequence and hence illogically links occupation within the first sublist.

B.Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and also - Same error as above. "Also" is not needed.

C.In the latter half of the second millennium, the British Empire's colonial policy was manifested in the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, and the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and in - Correct

D.In the latter half of the second millennium, manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and - Same error as in option A and B

E.In the latter half of the second millennium, manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and also - No "and" before the last item in the sublist

The settlement happened in 4 places:
1. the eastern colonies of North America
2. the island of Hong Kong
3. the bulk of the Indian subcontinent
4. the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa

There is no "and" before the last item of the list. Therefore D is wrong.

D.In the latter half of the second millennium, manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and

The policy led to the settlement of :
1) the eastern colonies of NA
2) the island of HK
3) the bulk of Indian subcontinent
4) the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa
5) the occupation of Egypt in northern Africa.

#5 is illogical... the settlement of occupation??

I have a question

Does the placement of "In the latter half of the second millennium" make any difference? I know (A) is wrong but I eliminated (C)

(D) (E) because I thought of the OG example with "Last year .. earthquake ... building constructed vs earthquake last year...,

constructed"

Some queries regarding this Q.

1. In option C ' was manifested ' -- Passive ( Still it has been taken as correct Ans )

2. In option D ' manifestations of the British..' -- Noun used.

In option D Not using ' And ' for the last item; has been taken as highest priority for POE.

Hey lary301254M7 ,

No, it doesn't make any difference. As per the meaning, both are saying when was the policy manifested. The OG question you are referring to has the wrong modifier placement. In one it is modifying when were the buildings constructed while in the other it is modifying when did the earthquake happen.

Hey rkpravi ,

No, your sentence is still incorrect. Original meaning of the sentence is where was the policy manifested. It was manifested in 1) Settlement 2) Occupation.

But your sentence is trying to convey the Manifestations of the policy led to Settlement and Occupation. Do you see the change in meaning? Rather your sentence is conveying a wrong meaning. Policy is manifested at something VS manifestation leads to something.

Hey soumya170293 ,

I am happy to answer your queries. :-)

1. It is okay to use passive voice if we don't have any other answer choice that is both grammatically and logically correct.

2. The problem with D is same I explained above. Policy is manifested at something VS manifestation leads to something.

3. Yes, that is TRUE. Because as per the meaning of the sentence, settlement and occupation should be || rather than the other list of items (eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa). You cannot make occupation || to regions. Hence, D is wrong.

Does that make sense?

Options A,B,D,E say :
'Manifestation led to...' which is wrong. Manifestation cannot led to anything.
Option C says :
'British Empire's policy was manifested to...' which is correct use.
So we are left with only one option, which is correct one.

Re: Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter [#permalink]
I went purely by meaning of the sentence. Manifestation means display/expression.

A.Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and: Manifestations can not lead to settlement of eastern colonies.

B.Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and also: Manifestations can not lead to settlement of eastern colonies. Parallelism issue in 'and also'.

C.In the latter half of the second millennium, the British Empire's colonial policy was manifested in the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, and the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and in: Perfect Parallelism manifested in 'A' and in 'B'. Meaning nicely conveyed by verb manifested

D.In the latter half of the second millennium, manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and: Opening modifier 'In the latter half of the second millennium' wrongly modifies 'manifestations'

E.In the latter half of the second millennium, manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and also: Opening modifier 'In the latter half of the second millennium' wrongly modifies 'manifestations'. Parallelism issue in 'and also'.

A.Manifestations of the British Empire's colonial policy in the latter half of the second millennium led to the settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, the island of Hong Kong, the bulk of the Indian subcontinent, the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa, and1. Manifestation of a policy can't lead to settlement rather is shown or displayed in the form of settlement. 2. Another point here is that manifestation..led to settlement of A,B,C,D, and occupation is not correct as it seems to suggest manifestation led to settlement occupation which is clearly not intended.
