A- predicted that, just as the growth of democracy has generally followed industrial development in other nations, democratic institutions will soon flourish
B- predicted, just as democracy has generally grown following other nations' industrial development, that democratic institutions will soon flourish
C- predicted, just as the growth of democracy generally following industrial development in other nations, that democratic institutions will soon be flourishing
D- predicted that, just as democracy has generally grown after other nations' industrial development, that democratic institutions will soon be flourishing
E- been predicting that, just as the general growth of democracy following other nations' industrial development, democratic institutions will soon flourish

I had the options narrowed down to A or B and I feel both are correct. Can someone explain if there's any particular reason B is wrong? (other than the fact that A is the closest in structure to the given question...)

Thank yoU!

Vishnu

B is wrong because in this version of the sentence, "just as…" illogically connects the first two clauses, rather than the last two. In other words, this wording suggests a comparison between the analysts' act of predicting and the growth of democracy -- an illogical comparison. In addition, in the wording "democracy has generally grown following other nations' industrial development", it is unclear whether democracy has grown in the same countries where industrial development has occurred.

Hope that helps

Its the question of placing the modifiers.
The modifier here is "just as the growth...."; the placement of this modifier matters a lot because it may describe how analysts predict or how the growth of democracy has generally followed. In these regards, BCD are disastrous and in E, the modifier is incomplete- it should be in a way that it must describe the action.
A fits the best.

Thank you Rock & Marcab. I can see where the incompleteness comes from. It was a good question, thank you!

Could someone please explain the comparison in the correct answer choice A?
How can "the growth of democracy" be compared with " democratic institutions"? Isn't it illogical to compare "the growth" with "institutions"? At the first glance, I eliminated A, C, and E for because of the illogical comparison, but I obviously was wrong. I still don't understand how this comparison is possible.

"will be flourishing" is wrong tense -> C and D are incorrect
E is out b/c of "been predicting
In B, "grown following" is wrong.
A is left.
