Effect is the subject here which is singular hence the singular verb is is used and not are.

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:



The first thing you have to look at is subject/verb agreement. To what does the verb ‘to be’ refer? It refers to the effect, which is singular. That means you have to say is regarded. That leaves you with choices C, D and E. Choice C disrupts the as/as idiomatic phrase that you so often see on the GMAT. Choice D uses a passive construction. Choice E is the correct answer.

Please can anyone help me as to why we are using Is in this case than are .. A,B and C are regarded as salary etc .. or is regarded ?

(A) are regarded as salary, than

(B) are regarded as salary, as

(C) is regarded as salary, than it pays

(D) is regarded as salary, as is paid

(E) is regarded as salary, as they pay

As much x as y..... In this idiom usage x must be parallel to y then if x is to men .... wouldn't it be incorrect y as "they pay to women " ...?
can anyone help me with this ?

Essentially if you bare everything from the sentence

Many companies pay almost twice as much to men ------- as is paid (pay and paid are not parallel here)
Many companies pay almost twice as much to men --- as they pay (Perfectly parallel) E is the correct answer

can anyone please explain how the usage of as much x as y is correct here? i think x and y are not parallel.
