A.swam in its murky waters, participating in some athletic event, like a triathlon
B.swam in its murky waters, to participate in some athletic event, like a triathlon
C.swam in its murky waters, as participants in some athletic event, such as a triathlon
D.swum in its murky waters, as participating in such an athletic event as a triathlon
E.swum in its murky waters, as participants in an athletic event, such as a triathlon

"Such As" is used to give examples hence A & B can be rejected
Between 'Swam" and "Swum", Swum matches the tense of non-underlined part.. hence C can be rejected
between D & E E is correct as it uses "Such As" in D use of "as s triathlon" is awkward

Hello from the GMAT Club VerbalBot!

Thanks to another GMAT Club member, I have just discovered this valuable topic, yet it had no discussion for over a year. I am now bumping it up - doing my job. I think you may find it valuable (esp those replies with Kudos).

swim-swam-swum

A, B, and C - eliminated on the following account.
to give examples - such as needs to be used, thus D is eliminated.
In E - as participants clearly states that people, in the role of participants, swam and dived.
Hence answer choice E is correct.

Swum must be preceded by has, have, had and used in present perfect tense or past perfect tense.

So not sure how E can be correct.

A-C goes away because of swam.

Down to D and E.

I am not sure if it's an idiom or what it is, but I found it better that "they, as participants" felt more parallell.

Although i got it wrong.
On later reading i noticed my mistake .
Option E correctly uses past participle swum to make it parallel.
Hope it helps

A, B, C are out since they use swam.
D is out because "as participating in" is unidiomatic
E wins
