BrentGMATPrepNow hi Brent, how is life may i know why are you adding 4 laps to Nick , and not to Marla, mustnt Marla be 4 laps ahead of Nick? like 32t+4 i know i am wrong in this case, but this is how i think about this problem and how can you equate distances if they are different one is 4 laps ahead than another

If Marla completed 4 more laps than Nick completed, then Marla's lap count is 4 greater than Nick's lap count.
In order to create an equation, we need to give Nick 4 extra laps.
If we give Marla 4 more laps, their lap counts won't be equal (i.e., we can't write an equation)

Marta completes 32 laps/hour or 32/60 or 8/15
Nick completes 12 laps/hour or 12/60 or 3/15

Relative speed = 8/15-3/15 = 5/15
Distance/relative speed = 4/(5/15)=4*(15/5) = 4*3=12

OR, solve by setting an equation

32t=12t+4
20t=4
t=1/5=12/60

30 min: 16:6
15 min: 8:3
