Martin buys a pencil and notebook for 80 cents. At the same store, glorida buys a notebook and eraser for \$1.20, and Zach buys a pencil and eraser for 70 cents. How much would it cost to buy 3notebooks, 3 erasers, and three pencils?

I'm happy to help.

P + E = 80
N + E = 120
P + N = 70

2P + 2E + 2N = 270

Multiply both sides by (3/2)

3P + 3E + 3N = (270)(3/2) = 135*3 = 405 ===> \$4.05

Often in a problem such as this, it's a mistake to solve for all the individual values --- we can use the combinations given to build the combination we need. See:

p + n = 80;
n + e = 120;
p + e = 70.

Sum above three equations 2(p + n + e) = 270 --> 3(p + n + e) = 270*3/2 = 405 cents.
