McDonough School of Business Joins Consortium

As of June 2013, Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business was chosen as the first business school to join the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management since 2010, making McDonough School of Business the eighteenth school on the Consortium’s list of member schools.

About the Consortium

The Consortium is a non-profit organization dedicated to the representation and diversification of U.S. minorities in top business schools and in the corporate world. The goal of the Consortium is to reduce the disparity in representation of Hispanics, African Americans, and Native Americans in the business school community and in the corporate business world at large. Through distributing fellowships, streamlining applications to eligible applicants among eighteen of the nation’s top business schools, and awarding membership to admitted students, giving them the opportunity to network with some of the most influential companies in America, the Consortium recruits and provides unique opportunities to business students who are equally committed to the mission of reducing underrepresentation. The Consortium is well known for being extremely selective in which schools it allows onto its member list, believing that by selecting only the top MBA programs in the country will it be able to give its underrepresented student members the greatest opportunity. As of July 2013, McDonough School of Business, the newest member school of the Consortium, began recruiting prospective MBA students through the Consortium to enter into McDonough in Fall of 2014.

About the McDonough School of Business

Located at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, McDonough School of Business was selected by the Consortium’s member institutions to join the organization, which includes some of the best business schools in the world including UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business, and the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. The selection of McDonough to join the Consortium attests to the school’s growing reputation and positive acclaim among peer institutions. The nomination for joining the Consortium comes at a time when McDonough has undergone several incremental changes. In 2011, McDonough welcomed a new dean from the Harvard Business School, David Thomas, who provided dynamic new ideas and resources to update the McDonough values and methods. Shortly after, as of 2012, McDonough launched a new curriculum dedicated to educating students on ethical leadership and the importance of developing leadership with a global mindset. Part of the new curriculum, aside from regular coursework, includes a requirement for students to complete four intensive, weeklong residencies to incorporate classroom-based knowledge in a hands-on setting. During one of these residencies, the Global Residency, McDonough second-year students travel abroad to tackle one of the challenge of an international corporate leader through collaboration with senior management, thus instilling applicable skills in a global setting.

For the 2013-2014 application cycle, future McDonough students that apply through Consortium will have unique opportunities for applicants who have a proven record of dedicating themselves to the Consortium’s mission, such as gaining a fellowship awarded by the McDonough scholarship board as well as prospects for networking and forming partnerships with over seventy Fortune 500 companies.

When to Apply

While the final deadline for the Consortium passed on January 5th, 2014, the Round 3 deadline for McDonough will be on April 1, 2014.
