Hi carcass,

could you please explain why in 3d question in answer choice A "they" is not ambiguous? Can't "they" refer to both rats and scientists?
Why in answer choice D by omitting "they" the sentence becomes unclear? Isn't it clear that "signs of disease shown" refers to rats? Here is the sentence without some fluff: The scientists noted that rats had begun to die even without signs of disease shown. Shown modifies signs. "Even without signs" is a phrase I guess that modifies die.

3) The scientists noted that rats suffering from the rare degenerative disease had
begun to die six months earlier, even though they had shown no signs of the
disease then
.
(A) earlier, even though they had shown no signs of the disease then
(D) earlier without any signs of the disease shown then
