Been accepted to Michigan and UNC-CH Master's Health Admin programs (NOT MBA) and hoped I could solicit advice at least from a quality of life/reputation/etc perspective, or even better for those who are healthcare MBA concentrations...?

(I'm also attending school as a USAF officer and am required to go back to the AF for 4 years post-grad... so reputation/alumni are especially important for when I transition out someday.)

Curriculums seem almost identical. I'm slightly more impressed at Michigan's internship/career placement stats but since I'm stationed in Japan haven't been able to visit the campus or network with any current/former students. UNC-CH gets great reviews from previous USAF attendees and weather/QoL would be nicer (?)

Sorry if this post is illegit since it's not b-school but any advice would be very, very appreciated.

I applied to both of them as I was initially thinking about an MBA/MHA dual degree at UNC or MBA/MHSA at Michigan. I ended up sticking with the MBA only but both are great programs.

I'm slightly biased since I'll be going to Michigan, but both have impressive alumni networks although Michigan's is larger. In speaking current students, I've also heard that some of the large hospitals reserve internship seats for Michigan students. You'll see this in the region surrounding most of the top MHA's but I'm not sure that happens with hospitals on both coasts...someone more familiar with UNC would have to confirm if they get similar treatment. Michigan does well with payer organizations too.

With that said though your decision should take into consideration where you would be happiest. Since you will be returning to the USAF for several years after school you won't be looking at full time recruitment as much. Alumni network in the areas you want to live as well as the organizations you want to work for is more important for your employment considerations. Ann Arbor and Chapel Hill are both excellent college towns so it's more of a personal preference as to which you would prefer for location. Considering the importance of the alumni network for you I would choose Michigan because their alumni network is larger (larger class size) which will allow you to tap into more opportunities down the road. You can't really go wrong with either but would be great to see you in AA this fall:) Thanks for your service and let me know if you have any other questions about the two!

I'm an alumni of MN: MHA and MBA.

MI is usually ranked #1. At MN (#2) we always heard that the MI program was a stronger base to proceed on to PhD & teaching.

Not sure "#1" gets you anything, but you could check post-grad fellowships for UNC. I'm sure MI has 100% placement (I know MN does). Then again, I assume you're staying in USAF, so post-grad placement doesn't matter.

The alumni network for any program tends to be clustered / more influencial in that state/region.

Class size mattered to me. MN had 28-30, and you spend the 1st and mainly 2nd semsters all in the same classes, broken into after-class case groups of 5-7. It was the most rewarding period of my life. I don't know the class sizes or structure of MI and UNC.

If you don't enjoy cold, I'd pick UNC.
