Mike, Sarah and David decided to club together to buy a present. Each of them gave equal amount of money. Luckily Sarah negotiated a 20% discount for the present so that each of them paid 4 dollars less. How much did they pay for a present?

Answer C.

We know that Sarah negotiated a discount of 20%, so each of them paid $4 less. Since there are three people, the 20% of the original price amounts to $12. 5 times 12$ is 60$, so the original price, before Sarah negotiated the discount, had been $60. They paid $12 less than the base price, so they spent $48.

Initial Contr............ x .......................... x ................... x ....................... 3x

4 discount ........... x-4 ........................... x-4 ................ x-4 .................. \(\frac{80}{100} * 3x\) (20% discount)

Setting up the equation

\(3x-12 = 3x * \frac{4}{5}\)

x = 20

x - 4 = 16

3(x-4) = 16*3 = 48

say each of them contributed x
so initial price p = 3x
after 20% discount , they each paid 4 dollars less
so 3x-12=4/5*P=4/5*3x
after solving we get x=20
so they paid for the present after discount=3x-12=3*20-12=48

Let the original price of the present be 3X..(considering initial contribution per person as x)
20% discount => 3X - 3X/5 = 12X/5

now if everyone of them had to pay $4 less, then total final discounted price will be 3X - 12

3X- 12 = 12X/5
X= 20

Hence finally after discount the price will be $48 (3*20 - 12)

20 % = 4 * 3 = 12
Gift Cost = 80 % = 4 * 12 = 48

Original Price x = 100%
Discount d = 20%
Final Price = 80%

Each of them saved 20% of what they had which is equal to $4 each. So total saving = 12$(20%)

so 80% equal to 4*12 = $48

OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

(C) If each of them paid 4 dollars less then together they paid 12 dollars less which is 20% of original price.0.2 × original price = 12original price = 12 / 0.2 = 6 / (1/10) = 6 × 10 = 60

Remember that they paid discounted price which is 12 dollars less. 60 – 12 = 48.

The answer is (C).

Here we go...

Let the prize of the gift = x
Discounted prixe = 0.8x

Each one has paid 4 dollars less----> total 3*4 = 12

So

x - 0.8x = 12

x = 60

prize they paid = 0.8 * 60 = 48

0.2x=12
x=60.

now, 20% discount -> 60*0.8=48.

Note: each of them saved 4 dollar.

Total discount = 4*3 = 12.

Discount is basically a portion of your selling price that u don't need to pay. Let say selling price was 100 and after discount the price became 80. so, 20 was part of 100. 80% selling price was charged.

12 is 20% of sp.

20% represent 12

1% represents 12 /20

80% represents (12 /20)*80 = 48

The best answer is C.
