Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and plan to apply for a mix of master in management and master in finance programs this year. I would really appreciate a profile evaluation :)

School: Top 20 LAC in the States
GPA: 3.84/4.00 (3.95+ after freshman year)
GMAT: 780 in one take (v47 q50)
Major: ECON
Nationality: Chinese
Internship: Big four+Accenture
Target programs:
1. HEC+Yale M2M
2. HEC MIF
3. LBS MiM
4. LSE MFin
5. LSE MiM
6. Oxford MFE
7. INSEAD MiM
8. CBS MSAFA
9. Yale Silver Scholars

My concern lies especially on my school, which has good reputation in the US but may not be heard of by the B-schools in Europe. Does it matter that much if I graduate from a LAC instead of a larger university? I am also worried about the fact that I don’t have much club/volunteer experience.

Hey KQ,

I would like to start off by saying that your GPA is good and your GMAT is excellent so that totally works in your favor.

Internship in Big 4 is a strong point in your profile aim to highlight projects and make sure you include the skills you developed during that time

Accenture is also a decent firm so the work experience there can be an add-on to your profile as well..

Coming to your goal of Mfin, you lack the experience relating to it, so it’d be important to add relevant projects related to finance, any certification courses you might have done or CFA exam scores that will help you make your profile stronger if you plan to persist in the finance program.

Talking about the schools, All the targeted schools are in the dream category and highly competitive so you will need to make sure that you ace every part of the application (essays, GMAT, LOR, resume) to get noticed.

HEC, INSEAD, Oxford and Yale would be the toughest of the lot, followed by LBS, LEC which have a slightly bigger chance of getting in considering you craft a strong application that highlights your leadership skills and other valuable skills in the business setting.

You’d have to showcase a passion for finance and superior goal clarity along with any relevant experience in the financial field if you want to get into any of these schools.
If you provide us with more information on internships and projects we can help you frame your thought process better. But your chances can range anywhere from 40-80% depending on how strong your application is.

In my suggestion, it’d be beneficial for you to get a certification in finance and an internship in the financial field.
Further, We would be glad to help and figure out what are the best schools you can target and improve your admissions chances. Feel free to set up a call for a strategy session with one of our consultants and discuss all your queries.

Hello everyone,
I’m a 22 year old student from India.
I have completed my graduation in 2019 with 7.8 CGPA, Accountancy Honors. I am also pursuing Chartered Accountancy (CA) and my finals are due this November. I have 3 years of articleship experience in an audit firm, which is a part of my CA curriculum. I had the opportunity to handle and lead various projects during these three years.
My GRE score is 330.
I also have work experience of workin for a mid size business firm and handling all the areas of business for a month.
I have won the regional elocution competition organised by ICAI and also hosted the students national conference organised in my city. Further, during my high school, I have run a few stalls that fetched a 100% profit. I also have volunteering experience at an organisation’s three day campaign to felicitate meritorious students.
I am also co founder of a student’s community formed to help fellow students who wish to pursue CA.
Can you please evaluate the aforementioned profile.
My target college includes HEC Paris, LSE and LBS. Any other university recommendations are welcome:)

Hey mahima71,

Well you have a pretty fair profile.

On the academic side of things your CGPA(7.8) is pretty decent and your GRE score (330) is excellent, so that’s a strong point.

You seem ambitious about pursuing a career in finance – this is reflected in your efforts to pursue your CA. So if you have worked with a good firm and handled some big projects during those three years this can all be highlighted in your application as the B-schools appreciate the same.

For your work experience you can talk about the work you have done. Aim to highlight projects, make sure you include the skills you developed during that time and how it is in sync with your articleship if this is highlighted properly then schools will be interested in this.

Extracurricular look fair but it won't be considered valuable by schools until you can show that you created some positive impact via it.

Remember that schools are more interested in impact created rather than participation, hence somewhere the extracurricular are lacking in quantifiable achievements. School experiences matter less unless you can show some consistency and link it to what you are doing at the moment.(Eg: How the win at the elocution contest as an experience was instrumental in helping you grow and how the growth was in turn instrumental in helping you reach the decision of getting a masters degree in management - This is just an overview, a lot of brainstorming will be required to frame this).
This applies for the student community as well, if it impacted a lot of people can be highlighted.

So with proper highlighting of your work experience – the brand, work done etc, and your extracurricular – the impact created, leadership angle, you can have a shot at your targeted schools where HEC, INSEAD and LBS that would fall under the dream category. While some competitive schools for you would be- LSE, ESSEC, UCD, TCD and WHU.

If you want to get a deeper insight into your profile and your selection chances at your target schools, I would suggest you send us your resume at support@mim-essay.com and further you can check out this free profile evaluation tool,

Hi, I would really appreciate help with my profile evaluation.

I'm a BTech- Mechatronics final year student (female, Indian) from Manipal University, Jaipur.
CGPA- 7/10
GMAT- 700

Extracurricular-
Helped organise several college fests including TEDx
been part of 3 MUNs
volunteered in various local NGOs.

Professional experience: 3 internships of 2 months each at various marketing organisations.

MOOC courses: I have completed 7 MOOC courses, all related to innovation, finance, entrepreneurship and marketing.

I'm looking at universities in UK, France, Italy or Germany.

It would be a great help if you could suggest schools that would fit my profile.

Hi Janhavinamjoshi,

Your profile looks good.
Academically your GMAT of 700 is pretty strong. Manipal University is a decent school and although your GPA is comparatively low so will face tough competition from candidates from better colleges. That said you can compensate for it by highlighting your other strengths in your profile, so make sure you work on the same.

The work experience is also quite decent. For your 3 internships, you might want to talk about the kind of work you did and the brands you worked with, and the ones you worked for. Any projects done or impact created can be a big help here and schools will appreciate it.

You have a good mix of extracurricular, your participation in various events, fests, and NGO’s, try to focus on how you created value rather than how you participated. Highlight any leadership roles or projects undertaken, remember that schools are more interested in impact created rather than participation, So highlight any quantifiable achievements.

MOOCs - The certificate itself will add only marginal value, however, if you use the learning to deliver a project or get an internship, this will get you brownie points.

As a final verdict, you can easily target your mentioned schools- ESCP, King’s College, and Trinity Dublin.
However, NUS you will not be eligible for since they require a business undergrad. While Imperial College requires an 8.5 GPA so you won’t be eligible for that too. Apart from this, you could also look at UCD, ESSEC, IE, and SMU as some pretty good alternatives.

If you want to get a deeper insight into your profile and your selection chances at your target schools, I would suggest you send us your resume at info@mim-essay.com and further you can check out this free profile evaluation tool,

I would like to know anything that will raise the chances of getting a scholarship, as this is the only way for me to study at HEC.

Hey Rishabhjoshi3030,

You are targeting MiM and MEM and you are targeting a mix of dream and competitive schools which is great. That said Imperial and Duke would come under the dream category while Warwick, ESSEC, ESCP, ESADE and IE would fall under the competitive category.

You have a GMAT of 700 so you are eligible to target all the schools mentioned above.

Based on your work experience, I see you have an offer with UNODA which is great. Since this is yet to happen, in your applications you can use this to talk about what your role would be and why you are driven towards working here.

Apart from that you worked at HCL as a senior analyst for two years, so here you can highlight the projects undertaken, impacts created in the role and how you have grown over the two years working there.

The year at Make a Difference would fit better in the volunteering aspect as it is a non-profit organization. It showcases your ability to empathize with others and you can talk about the projects done here and definitely highlight the meaningful impact you created in the lives of over 500 children. You have recruited people, supervised teams and organized drives which adds great value to your application. Since schools are looking for future leaders and change-makers.

Talking about your undergrad, your percentage of 72.8% is a bit on the lower side and your college is not a Tier 1 college which could be on a demerit side. Nevertheless, this can be compensated by showcasing the other aspects of your undergrad like how you participated in events or were more inclined towards practical knowledge and took up internships to build your profile holistically.

Your leadership experience in toastmasters club and increased membership is great as it showcases your leadership skills and how you took initiative and created impact. And as the captain of the college football team you could highlight your learnings from there, how you developed teamwork and the ability to tackle challenges. Basically any learnings from this sport. By properly showcasing how you would be a value addition to the schools and highlighting the facts that make you different from the other applicants will increase your chances of getting admitted.

For a more in-depth profile evaluation to increase your chances of admittance and more recommendations for schools and target programs you can email us your resume at info@mim-essay.com and further you can also check out this free profile evaluation tool for same :

Hi,
I'd like to have my profile evaluated.

23 years. Female.
I am preparing for GMAT and planning to give it in a month or so.
2 Years of work ex in an MNC in India.
Well technically will be completing 2 years in June 2021.
GPA 4.0 in Information Technology.
B.Tech from a reputed university in India.

Many extracurriculars such as MUNs, participation in college fests organization(if that counts).
National level Chess player.
Published a research paper.
Other than that trained in classical Indian dance and music( for this also I'm not sure if it counts or not).
Target Schools : LBS, INSEAD.

Also I have another question.
Should I apply for MIM or MBA?
Because for MBA I would need more work ex than 2 years.
And even if any college is accepting my MBA application it wouldn't be the top colleges in US/Europe.
So what is better MIM in a good college or MBA in an average college?

pankhuriarora28 hi,
Shimri from ARINGO here (head of the ARINGO strategy team and an LBS alumnus)
You have a great profile but a lot will ride on the GMAT...

Regarding MBA / MIM
According to your current work experience, you are a classic MIM candidate (right now, you have just over 1Y of full-time work experience, that is fine! even if you have 2Y and 2M of work experience when you start). You are still too young for an MBA

Next steps? complete the GMAT... then think about the applications
Feel free to send me your CV, GMAT score and any other info to shimriwARINGO after you take the test for a deeper profile assessment
GOOD LUCK

Respected Experts ARINGO MiMEssay,

I've started writing my essays for schools. The only question which I am not able to answer properly is "Why MIM from our school?"

What points should we include? Can we discuss about how their curriculum is unique? I read somewhere that we shouldn't talk a lot about curriculum because the AdCom already knows that. But if we don't talk about the curriculum then how're we supposed to answer the question? What can we say about why do I wish to study in their school?

Please let me know. Thanks

Hey Poldekmaster

Well, you have a pretty decent profile.

Starting off the evaluation by talking about the strengths of your profile, Your academic background is strong. You have two BA's so the admission committee would take the latest degree into consideration. Your major is relevant and your GPA is pretty good which showcases your strong academic capabilities.

Your exchange program in Spain also adds the factor of international exposure into your profile, something that all business schools appreciate. Here you can talk about your experience, what learnings you took away from it and how this experience broadens your horizons and perspective.

Also, work experience is quite strong. Credit Suisse is a good brand name and speaks for itself. Your two internships before that also further strengthen your profile especially the one you did in the US. here you can talk about what projects you undertook, what activities you participated in and moreover how you positively impacted the company by being in the job position. All of these aspects would help to establish you as a strong candidate.

Now coming onto your extracurricular, I can see that you have mentioned some activities from school. Unfortunately, they would be taken into consideration during the admission process. Your recent activities, especially the ones you did in UG hold much more value. So, if you can mention the activities from your UG that would be more beneficial.

Lastly, talking about the schools you have mentioned. All of them come into the dream category.

These schools are very stringent in their admission process and only have an acceptance rate of 12-15%. I would suggest you target a mix of schools that fall into dream, competitive and safe categories. In the competitive category you can target schools such as ESSEC, ESADE, FSFM, EDHEC and so on.
In the safe school category, you can go for schools such as Cranfield, University of Bath, Lancaster University, Kedge Business School etc.

Further, We would be glad to help and figure out what are the best schools you can target and improve your admissions chances. Feel free to set up a call for a strategy session with one of our consultants and discuss all your queries.

Hi All,

I'm in a difficult situation and hope the GMAT club community will help me in this.

I'm an international student from India currently pursuing my Master of Science in Management at Ivey Business School majoring in Business Analytics. I have completed two terms and two more to go. I joined this program expecting a blend of both business and analytics skills, but the program seems to be heavily concentrated towards data analytics. Hence, I withdrew from Ivey and planning to join a program which has a holistic approach towards Business and Management.

Considering the current pandemic situation, I’m planning to enrol in a course within Canada starting this Winter term. Deadline for most of the universities is over already. Out of available options, I have chosen three potential programs for the January 2021 intake.
1. MBA at John Molson (Already submitted my application and video essays, waiting for GMAT Result)
2. Master in International Business at Queens - Smith (Already submitted my application and video essays, given GMAT exemption, Yet to give final interview)
3. MSc in International Business at HEC Montreal( Yet to start the application process - GMAT required)

I will be giving my GMAT on 15th September and hope to score around (620 - 650) range.
I would like to know my chances of admission for these programs as well as how these programs stand with one another with respect to curriculum, learning, reputation among employers and future job prospects.

My Profile:
CGPA:
Bachelors in Engineering - 7.54/10
Master of Science in Management - 3.7 / 4.0 (Withdrew after 2 terms)
Work Experience:
Software (Information Technology - India) -> 28 Months
Internships:
Business Development - EdTech Startup (India) -> 6 Months
Analytics Consultant - Major Law Firm (London, Canada) -> 3 Months

Hey B5A,

Considering the programs that you have targeted, starting with the Masters in International Business at Queens and HEC Montreal both fall in the competitive category. Both of them are similar in terms of curriculum, learning, reputation among employers and future job prospects.
Since they are both top schools of the country, you would have no problems in terms of employment as all the big companies including the big four frequently hire graduates from both these schools.

As far as the curriculum and learning is concerned you need to do is study and research the entire program and curriculum and see which align better with your interests in business and management. Apart from that you should also look at the extracurricular the schools offer - the kind of clubs and associations they have, the events and exchange programs and how they could add value to what you want to do.

For the MBA at John Molson, it is also a competitive school. An MBA program is generally a manager's degree and requires 4-5 years of work experience, looking at your work experience, you have approximately 3 years of experience which is a bit on the lower end.
Since you have already submitted your application and video essays it would all come down to how you have presented yourself in the application. The trick here was to make up for the lacking years of work experience by talking about the projects you have undertaken, how you have learnt and gained skills at par with the other applicants with 5-6 years of work experience. Your application and how you have presented yourself would determine your chances of acceptance in the program.

Since you are yet to submit your application for the M.Sc. in International Business at HEC Montreal, you should focus on highlighting on your application how you are better than others and how you can add value to the school.
Highlighting your strengths and being specific about your goals should make your application more competitive and increase your chances of getting admitted to the program. I would suggest you to target a GMAT score above 700, the higher you score the better it would make your chances.

For the Jan intake programs, if you are not restricted only to Canada can definitely target schools such as : IE, SMU, NUS, University of Melbourne and University of Sydney.

Hope this helps

If you could please give the specific GMAT Score Range for these B-schools separately

Also suggest what can I do to improve my profile for having better chances of conversion.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Hey Abdullah09,

Looking at your profile, your undergraduate GPA is a little on a lower side. However, it can compensate for that by showcasing the other aspects of your profile like your extracurricular and how you have developed holistically.

You have participated in a lot of debate competitions, quizzing events and sports activities which is great. And you have also bagged accolades in these events. You can definitely highlight this aspect of your profile and showcase how you have been taking the initiative, leading teams and creating impacts. Thus showcasing how you have made efforts to develop holistically and not just be stuck to academic study that would definitely help you create a competitive application.

As you are actively involved in sports you can showcase skills like leadership, team spirit and other such skills. This can help cover your low GPA and showcase your other skills. Adcoms look for how you created value in these events so you need to showcase how you created impacts in these events and went above and beyond your role.

Moving on to your work experience, here make sure you highlight the projects you undertook at these roles, the skills you learned and how you created value. Properly highlighting this would allow you to stand at par with candidates with more extensive work experience from brand name firms.

You have a decent profile and can definitely get into the schools you are targeting. All the schools you are targeting, SKEMA, VLERICK, University of Mannheim and WHU Otto Beisheim come under the competitive category. For the schools in this category a GMAT score of 680+ would help.
You should definitely aim to score as high as you can since a strong GMAT score would bolster the AdComs confidence in your academic abilities and offset your low GPA and improve your acceptance chances.

Apart from that showcasing any volunteering or CSR activities that you participated in during your work experience would highlight your application. You can also take professional certifications in the management field like 6 Sigma or MOOC’s in the field of marketing to showcase your interest in the program.
