A. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less, --> the correct way of using and is "...., and...."
B. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, they cost less, --> 'they' can refer to 'sport utility vehicles' or 'Minivans'
C. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers, in comparison with most sport utility vehicles, and have a lower cost, they --> awkward
D. Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less, --> 'carrying as many as seven passengers' is correctly modifying Minivans and 'cost less' is parallel with 'get better gas mileage, allow passengers to get in and out more easily, and have a smoother ride'E. Minivans, which carry as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles the cost is lower, and they --> awkawrd

I was between A and D.

Went for D ... after looking answer, I was happy;

But when I searched -- seems like OA is A not D

A Good Question. Didnt see the incorrectly placed "and" and selected A over D.
D is it.

Obvious D , a perfect question with two modifiers.

When there are too many words between verb and subject, error mostly lies in between both of them.

If any one has doubt pls let me know

Thanks for the link.

I did answer A and then tried to figure out why D was right.

D sounded as if all the other qualities are true only when minivan is carrying seven passengers.

I thought that 'and' after seven passengers was awkward in A, but an instructor in MGMAT forum explains why it is ok.

OA is A according to manahattan GMAT forum, so you should check the OA once again studen26.

But I think D means that only the minivans those carry as many as 7 people cost less....etc.... here carrying 7 people is an essential part.... but after reading the question, I thought Carrying 7 peoples is just an additional fact....
So, option D changes the meaning....
Here my question is whether wrong usage of 'and' is considered more erroneous than 'change of meaning'.... by GMAC

somehow even i feel that D changes the meaning.
Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with....
even though 'carrying as many as passengers' is modifying minivans, if we see idiom 'compared with' 'X compared with Y', then the whole context changes.
Hence i feel A is correct.
even though 'and' is used in A , subject is still minivans, which is being compared with sports utility vehicles.

A.

D -> If you remove adjectival phrase that starts with carrying, the sentence becomes

Minivans compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,..

Here comma starts even before the list.. wrong choice?

A -> If you remove phrase that starts with compared, the sentence becomes

Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and cost less,...

Here if you think of phrase 'compared with most sport utility vehicles' as an adverbial phrase modifying the sentence then 'and' before the phrase makes sense.

how can it be D?

Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with ---> this literally means the comparison with the SUVs is taking place at the moment when the minivans are carrying as many as 7 people... imagine a snapshot: a minivan with 7 people... and a SUV next to it and a bystander makes this comment... "carrying" seems to give me that impression.

A seems better to me
