Hi,

I have a doubt concerning MIT Sloan's first essay question -

Essay 1: The mission of the MIT Sloan School of Management is to develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world and generate ideas that advance management practice. Discuss how you will contribute toward advancing the mission based on examples of past work and activities. (500 words or fewer, limited to one page)

How many stories would be optimum for this essay / How many stories would Sloan be expecting the applicants to talk about - 1 or 2 or more? - keeping in mind 500 words limit, I feel more than 2 would not justify the depth attained in each of the stories. Please suggest.

Thanks.

My two cents: I think one or two examples are sufficient. Any more than that, and you'll either struggle to keep the essay at 500 words or sacrifice the impact of your stories. Just make sure to either tie the examples together (for a stronger essay) or at the very least have an appropriate transition.

You need to prove you can match the vision. The key words your examples needs to pick are are below:
Generate ideas, move management practice forward.

You can have one big example at 500 words, two different examples of 250 words Or three different examples of 150, to help you show you match the vision.

Hey there,

MIT values specificity and insight. At MOST, reference two examples. You aren't just recounting anecdotes when it comes to MIT. You have to take it many levels deeper. You have to talk not only about what, but how and, more importantly, why.

I think you're best at 1 example. Keep in mind, your example(s) will be used to support an overarching theme that will also require its own word count space. That said, there are ways to include multiple examples without actually explaining most of them. Effectively, they establish precedent and trajectory but that's a literary strategy that doesn't directly address your question.

Thanks Bhavik. With a 500 word limit it is always going to be span vs depth, and with the responses on this question it is clear to me that depth is important and 1-2 examples should suffice.

Thanks again!
