What is the source? The sentence is misusing the word "element", which makes it hard to know if the "increase in art prices" is an "element", in which case we'd need to say "more than any *other* element", or if it's not an "element", in which case we would not use the word "other". By subject/verb agreement, C needs to be the answer, but when GMAT SC so often tests meaning these days, it's important for realistic practice questions to use words correctly.

More than any single element, the increase in art prices has caused the wholesale theft, mutilation, and destruction of art everywhere in the world.

A) More than any single element, the increase in art prices has caused.

In any single element, the increase in art prices is included too. we need any other.

B) More than any other element, the increase in art prices have been responsible for

Increase should have singular verb. Have been is wrong we need has been.

C) More than any other single element, the increase in art prices has been responsible for
I was first skeptical about this. I felt like element itself is singular and we don't single before element. But S-V agreement error in B is resolved.. Keep this option.

D) The increase in art prices, more than any single element, has been the reason for
Is more than any single element referring to art prices or the increase

E) An increase in the price of art works have been responsible, more than other elements, for

again same S-V agreement error in as in B.

Answer is C.

Problem with A and D - by using any single element we can say even increase in prices is covered, something can not be a greater reason than itself. Out

E and B have a subject-verb disagreement, "The increase in prices of art" is singular needs a singular verb form.

C gets these both correct.

B) More than any other element, the increase in art prices have been responsible for - Have creates SV agreement issue

C) More than any other single element, the increase in art prices has been responsible for - Seems okay

D) The increase in art prices, more than any single element, has been the reason for - other is missing,

E) An increase in the price of art works have been responsible, more than other elements, for - SV agreement issue

More than any single element, the increase in art prices has caused the wholesale theft, mutilation, and destruction of art everywhere in the world.

A) More than any single element, the increase in art prices has caused // any "other" single element. Other is essential, why? Because any single element includes the increase in art prices.

B) More than any other element, the increase in art prices have been responsible for // a subject and a verb disagree

C) More than any other single element, the increase in art prices has been responsible for // correct

D) The increase in art prices, more than any single element, has been the reason for // it sounds as if the increase in art prices or art prices is/are more than any single element.

E) An increase in the price of art works have been responsible, more than other elements, for // a subject and a verb disagree

Let's be frank, my first attempt was wrong.

I am just wondering if there is a difference between saying has caused and has been responsible for?

I was stuck between A and C (didn't catch the required other in C) and was trying to decide based on this difference in wording.

More than any single element, the increase in art prices has caused the wholesale theft, mutilation, and destruction of art everywhere in the world.

A) More than any single element, the increase in art prices has caused ----> It should be "More than any other single element"

B) More than any other element, the increase in art prices have been responsible for ---> SV disagreement. Subject(the increase) is singular, but the verb(have been) is plural.

C) More than any other single element, the increase in art prices has been responsible for---> Correct. It has corrected the issue mentioned in A and subject-verb agreement also looks ok.

D) The increase in art prices, more than any single element, has been the reason for --> It should have been "more than any other"

E) An increase in the price of art works have been responsible, more than other elements, for --->SV disagreement. Subject(the increase) is singular, but the verb(have been) is plural.

We are comparing one element with the other element. The word 'other' is important here. In above 2 options , the word 'other' is missing.
Eliminate.

Quote:
B) More than any other element, the increase in art prices have been responsible for
E) An increase in the price of art works have been responsible, more than other elements, for

Subject-Verb Agreement error. Increase is singular, therefore we need 'has' and not 'have'.
Quote:
C) More than any other single element, the increase in art prices has been responsible for

Subject-Verb in agreement. Other also used.

tittoo , welcome to SC Butler.

In this instance, no, has caused and has been responsible for do not differ much in meaning.
Both mean "to result in."

Hurricane Laura has caused at least 17 deaths.
Hurricane Laura has been responsible for at least 17 deaths.

The different phrasing is a distraction, akin to that present in some GMAT questions.

In rarefied settings, especially legal ones, a difference between the verbs might exist.
No official GMAT sentence that I recall has ever turned on that rarefied difference.

I will post the OE on Wednesday 9/2, Pacific Daylight Time, U.S..
