Mr. Q: More and more people are drinking mineral water. Having a mineral water dispenser in one's home, and having water delivered, will soon become popular since it makes more sense than constantly buying bottles.

Mr. S: I don't think that will happen since having water delivered is far more expensive than buying bottles of water.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens Mr. Q's claim?

(A) Water that contains a high amount of minerals per volume is known as hard water.

(B) Signing up to a water delivery service requires that the consumer buy a fairly expensive dispenser from the supplier.

(C) Bottles are easier to recycle than containers for mineral water dispensers.

(D) Having water delivered usually results in the monthly cost of drinking water to be about 20% more expensive than water from other sources.

(E) Many consumers are willing to pay extra in order to avoid the hassle of having to purchase, carry, store, and recycle mineral water bottles.

Answer: Option E

Strengthening question: We have to find an answer which justifies "having water delivered" even when it is comparatively expensive.

(A) Water that contains a high amount of minerals per volume is known as hard water.
=> Quantity of minerals and what it is being called is not relevant here.

(B) Signing up to a water delivery service requires that the consumer buy a fairly expensive dispenser from the supplier.
=> This is similar to Mr. S's claim. If it is very expensive then it will weaken Mr. Q's claim.

(C) Bottles are easier to recycle than containers for mineral water dispensers.
=> Recycling of containers for Water dispenser is not part of the argument. We don't know about the frequency of recycling needed for containers for Dispenser. Irrelevant.

(D) Having water delivered usually results in the monthly cost of drinking water to be about 20% more expensive than water from other sources.
=> This is similar to Mr. S's claim. If it is very expensive then it will weaken Mr. Q's claim.

(E) Many consumers are willing to pay extra in order to avoid the hassle of having to purchase, carry, store, and recycle mineral water bottles.
=> CORRECT. If many consumers are fine with extra cost and there are added advantages which makes lot of their work hassle-free, then surely it will become popular and strengthens Mr. Q's claim

(A) Water that contains a high amount of minerals per volume is known as hard water.-- it's OUT OF SCOPE, hard water is not at all a concern for buyers

(B) Signing up to a water delivery service requires that the consumer buy a fairly expensive dispenser from the supplier.-- it's a weakener it's weakening Q's argument

(C) Bottles are easier to recycle than containers for mineral water dispensers.-- we have to strengthen Q's argument , but it strengthening S argument

(D) Having water delivered usually results in the monthly cost of drinking water to be about 20% more expensive than water from other sources.--again it's strengthening S argument and not Q ---OUT

(E) Many consumers are willing to pay extra in order to avoid the hassle of having to purchase, carry, store, and recycle mineral water bottles.--- THIS IS CORRECT, BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT Q said people prefer to order mineral water or buy dispenser even if they have to pay extra bevause it's hassle free

IMO E

Argument :
Mr. Q: More and more people are drinking mineral water. Having a mineral water dispenser in one's home, and having water delivered, will soon become popular since it makes more sense than constantly buying bottles.

Mr. S: I don't think that will happen since having water delivered is far more expensive than buying bottles of water.

Ques : Which of the following, if true, most strengthens Mr. Q's claim?

Pre-thinking : We need to find an option which shows that people will prefer water dispenser or water delivered to them given that these two are true :
1. More and more people are drinking mineral water.
2. Water delivered is far more expensive than buying bottles of water.

Lets analyse our options now :
(A) Water that contains a high amount of minerals per volume is known as hard water. - Incorrect as this point is completely irrelevant and also brings outside information which has no relation with the argument.

(B) Signing up to a water delivery service requires that the consumer buy a fairly expensive dispenser from the supplier. - Incorrect as this is already present in the argument and goes opposite to the conclusion of Q's claim. Why will people sign up for an expensive solutions?

(C) Bottles are easier to recycle than containers for mineral water dispensers. - Incorrect as this goes in opposite to Q's claim. Why will people opt for a more diffcult option?

(D) Having water delivered usually results in the monthly cost of drinking water to be about 20% more expensive than water from other sources. - Incorrect as this is similar to option B and goes opposite to Q's claim.

(E) Many consumers are willing to pay extra in order to avoid the hassle of having to purchase, carry, store, and recycle mineral water bottles. - Correct this explains that even though the alternative is an expensive solution people will choose this option becuase people worry about the hassle more than price.

Mr. S: I don't think that will happen since having water delivered is far more expensive than buying bottles of water.

Stimulus: Mr Q thinks that more people are drinking mineral water so having a mineral dispenser and having water delivered will soon become popular since it makes more sense than constantly buying bottles; however Mr. S thinks that it wont happen since having water delivered is expensive than buying bottles of water

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens Mr. Q's claim? (Claim that people will buy dispenser and will get water delivered at home)

(A) Water that contains a high amount of minerals per volume is known as hard water. Irrelevant

(B) Signing up to a water delivery service requires that the consumer buy a fairly expensive dispenser from the supplier. Weakens the claim of Mr Q

(C) Bottles are easier to recycle than containers for mineral water dispensers. Irrelevant

(D) Having water delivered usually results in the monthly cost of drinking water to be about 20% more expensive than water from other sources. weakens Mr. Qs claim

(E) Many consumers are willing to pay extra in order to avoid the hassle of having to purchase, carry, store, and recycle mineral water bottles. Correct. It clearly gives an alternate explanation of why people though expensive would buy dispensers instead of buying mineral bottles

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

This is a Conclusion Strengthening question in the Dialog format. You are asked to choose the answer choice which strengthens Mr. Q's claim (or weakens Mr. S's objection):

Image

This statement neither weakens nor strengthens Mr. Q's claim. The definition of the phrase hard water is irrelevant to the topic at hand. The argument is about whether the delivery of mineral water to homes will increase in popularity. Your task is to look for an answer choice that supports Mr. Q's claim that it will become more popular.

(B) Signing up to a water delivery service requires that the consumer buy a fairly expensive dispenser from the supplier.

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens Mr. Q's prediction since it provides a reason why consumers may not want to sign up for the delivery of mineral water. Remember, we are looking for a statement that can support Mr. Q's claim that the delivery of mineral water will become more popular.

(C) Bottles are easier to recycle than containers for mineral water dispensers.

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens Mr. Q's prediction since it provides a reason why consumers may want to stick to buying bottles - they are friendlier to the environment. However, we are looking for a statement that can support Mr. Q's claim that the delivery of mineral water (using dispensers and containers) will become more popular.

(D) Having water delivered usually results in the monthly cost of drinking water to be about 20% more expensive than water from other sources.

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens Mr. Q's prediction. The fact that the cost may be 20% higher for delivered water only provides a reason why consumers may not want to sign up for it. However, we are looking for a statement that can support Mr. Q's claim that the delivery of mineral water will become more popular.

(E) Many consumers are willing to pay extra in order to avoid the hassle of having to purchase, carry, store, and recycle mineral water bottles.

This answer choice provides an excellent reason why consumers would be happy to sign up for delivered water despite the fact that it may cost more than if they were to buy bottled water. In this way, it strengthens Mr. Q's claim that the delivery of mineral water will become more popular.
