Hi there,

I've been a long time lurker on this forum, and decided to begin posting my progress towards beating the GMAT! I took the exam once in 2008 and scored a 610, without understanding how to study and just doing practice problems. So this year, I decided to tackle the GMAT once and for all, and plan to take it in September with the goal of a 720! I see that many people on here have had dramatic increases in their scores, so it gives me hope that I can do it too! I'm not sure if I posted this in the right forum, but I will be documenting my progress until d-day.. So here goes:

Knewton Exam 1: 560 (q37 v31)
I took this exam before the class started and without studying for 2 years. I thought I would have done better, but whatever. I will be taking my second test as my class just ended and want to see how much I've learned. I've been going through my MGMAT sentence correction book, so feel pretty good on that section (just have to watch for stupid mistakes!

Will keep updating.. thanks for joining me in my journey!

Welcome Folex98 - look forward to having you around
Do you have an idea when you are planning to take the test?

Good Luck - take a look at the gmat calendar and error log just in case.

Trust me, I was in your situation not too long ago. The score I earned on test day was my dream number. It will feel great and you WILL NOT regret all the sacrifices that you made to reach your goal.

One of the keys to success for me was to be patient and consistent. And GMATClub will help you as much as you need it to help you. Take advantage of all the information and questions this website offers.

Just make sure that you read the Manhattan SC guide at least twice.

Thanks guys! i plan to take the test mid September for fall 2011 admission. I just took my 2nd Knewton exam, and just as I suspected:

Knewton Exam #2: 620 (q35 45% v41 92%)
I knew i was going to do well in the verbal section of the exam since i've been solely focusing on it, but didn't think there would be such a discrepancy! What's worse is my time management: I didn't finish 6 quant and 3 verbal questions. I'm actually happy with my progress seeing how I was shooting for a score of 40+ on verbal. I knew that I would struggle with quant, but am confident that I can it up more easily than verbal.

After MGMAT SC, I plan to go through the following:
1. MGMAT Number Properties
2. MGMAT Geometry
3. MGMAT Word Translations
4. Powerscore Critical Reasoning

I am concurrently going through OG 12 with the MGMAT books. I also have a Kaplan Premier 2008 edition, is it worth going through that as well, even though it's quite dated?

Manhattan's math series offers the best coverage of quant available. You have chosen wisely. I did not use any Kaplan material, so cannot comment too much on this. Since you already have the book, I don't see the harm in using it. However, if you're looking for hardcore math practice, then go for the GMATClub Tests.

You have good verbal score.

Mgmat quant + Gmat club tests + OG12 + Og Quant + Mgmat Tests + Gmatprep Tests

Just follow the above combination. You wont require anything else for Quant.

Regarding Verbal
Mgmat SC + Powerscore CR + OG12 + OG verbal + Mgmat tests + Gmatprep tests.

hi folks, quick question - how long should it take to get through an mgmat book? i finally got through the SC book after about 1 month. I went through SC while taking the Knewton course as well, which is pretty involved, so my focus was more on class than getting through the book. i know i have to ramp up the time i take to get through each subsequent book, but is there a good rule of thumb out there?

While everyone is different and has their own pace, it's important to successfully complete the books as quickly as possible. I'm probably alone on this one, but I didn't find the end-of-chapter questions very useful. I'm too hesitant to make a recommendation, but if you didn't do those MGMAT questions, then you could finish the books fairly quickly.

The Word Translations book will take the longest, while the Geometry and FDP guides can be finished in a few days. Sorry that I couldn't be more specific.

thanks guys! just got through the mgmat number properties book, roughly 80% hit rate for related og12 questions.. i think the divisiblity/prime factorization section is where my weakness lies.. i have 3 more mgmat books which i plan to get through in 2 weeks. then i will spend the rest of the time taking practice exams (unless i need to go through powerscore cr, however, i'm pretty confident in cr at this point. quant is giving me fits!). does that sound like a reasonable plan?

Just finished the MGMAT Equations, Inequalities, & VICs book. I struggled a bit with the problem sets at the end of the chapters (esp the VICs), but ended up hitting 95% of the related OG12 problems. is that a common occurrence? are the mgmat questions harder than the OG questions?

starting word translations now. I'm a little behind but can make up ground over the week and this weekend. i feel like i've been neglecting verbal for a while, i should choose a few verbal questions out of the OG to keep my verbal skills sharp. how do you guys handle this? do you just completely zone in on quant and forget about verbal?
