Yes, but why not E? [#permalink]

My answer was E- thinking that "they" is used later in the sentence meant "Neanderthals" had to be plural. Why is that not right?

Thanks!

Nandan,
Agree with your explanation! I also picked E.

Good post !

Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes and so were probably without language, a shortcoming that may explain why they were supplanted by our own species.

a) Neanderthals had a vocal tract that resembled those of the apes
b) Neanderthals had a vocal tract resembling an ape's
c) The vocal tracts of Neanderthals resembled an ape's
d) The Neanderthal's vocal tracts resembled the apes'
e) The vocal tracts of the Neanderthals resembled those of the apes.

I think here we are talking about Neanderthals. So, they should be the subject. I think "D" is the correct answer, as the first sentence(in Q) talks about Neanderthals.

Yes its a good question.

It was the Neanderthals that were without a language, not the vocal tracts.

A - 'vocal tract/those' are not ||

Thus B stands....

B.

Need to compare two pasts...supplanted because they "had" a vocal tract not conducive to language....C,D and E are out.

A has pronoun error in "those".
