Nearly all mail that is correctly addressed arrives at its destination within two business days of being sent. In fact, correctly addressed mail takes longer than this only when it is damaged in transit. Overall, however, most mail arrives three business days or more after being sent. If the statements above are true, which one of the following must be true?

A) A large proportion of the mail that is correctly addressed is damaged in transit.

B) No incorrectly addressed mail arrives within two business days of being sent.

C) Most mail that arrives within two business days of being sent is correctly addressed.

D) A large proportion of mail is incorrectly addressed.

E) More mail arrives within two business days of being sent than arrives between two and three business days after being sent.

Would appreciate if you guys could contribute. Those who know the answer, please state upfront the source of your answer and the reasoning behind the answer. Those who don't know but would like to give it a shot, please feel free to try but kindly state upfront that you are not sure of the correct answer.

Thanks and cheers

I would say A.
My reasoning is as follows:
If mail had been correctly addressed and undamaged in transit, it would have reached in 2 days. Only reason most correctly addressed mail would reach in 3 days is if it is damaged in transit.

B: The given statements tell nothing about how long incorrectly addressed mail takes.
C: We do not know how long incorrectly addressed mail takes.
D: If most mail arrives 3 days later, it could be either incorrectly addressed or damaged in transit. This need not be true.
E: most mail reaches 3 days or later.

Thanks.

This question must be D.

The first sentence tells us that MOST correctly addressed mail arrives in 2 days, while a portion of (the damaged portion) takes longer than 2 days.

Since most mail takes more than 3 days, a majority of it MUST be incorrectly addressed.

To make this clearer: Assume that most mail taking 3 days were correctly addressed. This contradicts the first statement. Hence most mail taking > 3 days must be incorrectly addressed.

I will go with A, as the stem says "Nearly all correct addressed mails....".
The option A therefore becomes stronger as comapred to D.

Not if the most correctly addressed mail was also damaged in transit which is what choice A says. So choice D need not necessarily be true. The question asks "must be true?".

It boils down to this:

Most Mail Late

The first premise is that MOST correctly addressed mail arrives in 2 days, thereby supporting that a MINORITY of correctly address mail gets damaged.

Since this is a minority, Incorrect addressing must account for the lateness of most mail.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree with D. I initially picked D, then got stuck over whether it "must" be true.

well here i wud go for C

we cannot absolutely arrive at the conclusion (D) that large portion of the mail is incorrectly addressed

the argument only says that most mails arrive late

for ex. out of 20 mails if 10 r correctly addressed (including 3 mails damaged) n other 10 r incorrectly addressed
than 13 out of 20 will reach late

n here incorrectly addressed mails r not a large portion

in fact it is also possible that there can be a third reason 4 the mails to reach late

so C it is

Before beginning, this is CR, not SC !

Anyway, this is my reasoning for choosing (A).

A) A large proportion of the mail that is correctly addressed is
damaged in transit.
- We're told overall most arrive three days or more, and that only damaged mails takes longer than 2 days, so this is a good choice

being sent.
- We're not told what happens to incorrecty addressed mails. In fact, they'll still arrive within two days, just at the wrong place the sender intended it to be.

C) Most mail that arrives within two business days of being sent is
- Same as B. Incorrectly addressed mail will still arrive, just at the wrong destination.

D) A large proportion of mail is incorrectly addressed.
- In this passage, we're told only what happens to mails that are damaged in transit, not to mails that are incorrectly addressed.

E) More mail arrives within two business days of being sent than
arrives between two and three business days after being sent.

So (A) is my choice

This is the only thing that is stated clearly in the CR. If it reached in 2 days then it HAS to be correctly address, coz if it were damaged it wud NEVER reach that easily

=========================================

In fact, I hesitated between C and D. My initial answer was C. But after thinking through, I rejected C too. Why? Simply because the text did not say that incorrectly addressed mails CANNOT arrive within 2 days!!! If incorrectly addressed mails CAN also arrive within 2 days, then C will not be true. In other words, C need not necessarily be true. (this is a must be true question). D has stronger arguments as explained by a number of you guys already.
