I'm in a Manhattan GMAT course, online, and endless to say the course is not working for me.

Before without the class I was consistently scoring in the low 400, with more studying and more practice problems i moved to 430, then to 460, then 470, in about two months of studying for about an hour per day, reading a MGMAT chapter, then doing the actual OG problems pertaining to that chapter. I did a few CR questions but not many, I did almost zero RC problems during my studying, My focus on my studying was SC, PS, and some DS. The highest question I saw for PS out of the OG 12 th Ed was problem 100, for DS was problem 60-65 somewhere there.

Fast forward a month, thinking that the course would of helped, just finished the 4th week, it did the exact opposite, It hurt me more than it helped.

I followed the syllabi to the T. And my score dropped back to 400, I guess the biggest difference in my studying is that I went from 80% Gmat problems of my study focus, to about 2% gmat problems.

Can someone help give me their 2 cents as to how to better incorporate all subjects. MGMAT is all concept, and basic review but almost no actual GMAT practice, Me studying by myself, I was not sure if I was studying correctly or what that's why I took the class, can someone help? I really need to increase my score Dramatically, and I'm stuck, and I'm frustrated.

I decided to take the gmat course, and I wanted to see if my fundamentals were off or something, but having all the concept thrown at me is useless unless I practice it immediatly. Help?

Here are my thoughts but please be aware they are based on attending a manhattan trial class.
Manhattan assumes you know the basics. I would brush up on them eg timetables, algebra and difference between a noun and a verb.
As I understand I know manhattan does courses on theses, might be worth emailing them to see what they can do.

I found my test score dropped as I was focusing on different elements and it took a couple of weeks for it to come together and be reflected in my score.
I would ask whether you've been studying too much and might need a week off and give your brain a break.

Hey Sarahrs,

Thank you for you reply, that's the thing, I am familiar with the basic concepts, I've read the books twice already, the second time around, I started studying with actual gmat problem, then I jumped a lot on my score from 400 to 470 in a matter of 3 weeks. I reviewed the gmat cat and I noticed that I could of got a few more answers correct in all categories, my quant jumped to 36 from 19, so I made a significant improvement overall. What I did, was stop and start the course. Then I dropped, the big major difference was that I was doing GMAT problems. I'm going to utilize the same structure of the syllabus. So I can see material consistently.

My idea is to skip the problem from the syllabus and do straight problems pertaining to the chapter of that week, so if we are covering word problems next week, ill do word problems gmat problems this week, and ill also incorporate other topics so I grow evenly, opposed to just two or three areas.

Could you break down your test scores between quant and the verbal.

What the timing like on your practice exams? Do you finish the exams, do you find them easy or hard? Have you tried an official GMAT practice exam?

Hi selfishmofo,

Indeed, basic concepts are good to know, but they won't get you too far on the GMAT. Most people taking the GMAT pretty much know the basic concepts. So knowing just the basics is not going to set you apart from everyone else.

This is where the application of concepts mixed with variations in a test environment comes into play. So sure - make the most of your basics, but don't forget to take that extra step to exhaust various modifications to a test question so that you can still answer it correctly even if the GMAT folks ask the question in a slightly different manner.

See what else you can do to optimize your experience with your existing materials. But if you are still stuck, then you should look around to see what other options might suit your specific learning needs.
