Please read both and tell me which is more GMAT appropriate and why?

In the Apple open world, Jobs announced that it is very important for every American to own an iPhone, thereby causing a run on all apple stores.

In the Apple open world, Jobs announced that it is very important for every American to own an iPhone, it caused a run on all apple stores.

When the sentence is describing causation as the one above - Is it appropriate to use it? additionally do you see any issues with using the word causing instead of caused.
