GMATCLUB Members,

I have put together a new Error for preparing for the GMAT. It is a simple excel based error log. The main difference from other error logs is that you can calculate your ability for each topic.

How to calculate weights/Difficulty level: To find the accurate ability for each section, it is really necessary to put correct weights for each questions. Sample way to enter the weights for the questions.

I have segregated the questions based on the following,

Easy(500 Level)- 2
Medium(600 level)-4
Hard(700+Level)- 6.

In many test prep companies online question banks- the questions are segregated with the difficulty level. So you can use that measure to enter the weight in the Log.

If you are using GMATclub forum to answer the questions- You can find out the difficulty level of the questions using "tags" or more appropriately use the GMATclub timer feature. Since it gives the difficulty level questions based on the attempts.

If you are using OG Online tool to practice- The questions are segregated using the difficulty level as well. So use that feature to enter the weight.

Now about the log.

Ability to answer 700+ level questions gets your high score on the GMAT. The ability is also mentioned in the ESR. So, I felt it is good to have an error log to calculate our ability as a main measure instead of accuracy.

This error log focuses on that aspect.

In egmat workshop, I got the formula sheet which was used to calculate the ability on that workshop questions. So I used that logic to make this error log. Thanks, Egmat!! :-D

Also, the scholaranium of egmat uses this ability for the questions. Give it a try.

Below are the screenshots from this error log.

Gnpth - this might be a silly question, but do you recommend logging all of your questions right or wrong? After all, is called an "error log" so I thought it was worth clarifying.

Thanks,

Yes, You should. So that you check your progress on that question when you redo it after some time.

Hi Gnpth, I appreciate your efforts in creating such a cool error log which provides good insight for anyone who is preparing on its own. However, I have a request for a feature that could be added to this error log for more insights.

If this log could give me the average time that took me to answer correct/wrong answers in particular sections then it will help even more in evaluating myself.

Hi ujjwal80

Thanks for the suggestion. I have added the average time charts under the respective "Stats" tab.

Here is the updated file.

Hi Gnpth,

I have been using the tracker extensively. Thank you for building it up and sharing it with us.

Quick question: What would the minimum ability % and accuracy % be if one is aiming to score a 700+?

@diegocml : your ability should be around 80%. This is purely based on how many hard questions u r getting right. Accuracy also needs above that range!

Hope it helps!!

Hi,

The error log is really helpful, since I discovered this post after I made my own version. Can you give the method for calculating the ability and accuracy %.

This would be of great help as it will allow me to calculate the same using my exiting error log.

Regards
SG

Not sure. Nobody reported it yet. What version of Excel do you use?

Ability is calculated based how many tough questions you can get correct. For example- If you get 70% in 600 level questions and more than 90% in 500+ level questions then you have better chances of retaining your score in 600 level. So

Accuracy- Just % out of how many questions you got correct vs attempted.

Ability is an important factor here. If you can get at least 60- 70% ability in 700+ questions and more than 85% ability in 500 & 600+ question. You can expect your scores to range from 650 to 700. So simply, more your ability % for difficult questions, the higher you can expect the score but provided you don't make mistakes in easy and medium level questions.

Hey Nightmare007 ,

I am glad you like it. :-)

Make great notes and download the excel whenever you feel your error log is ready.

I will shortly post a detailed post on how to use it. :-)

Thanks

Thank you, Gnpth! This error log will provide me with a handful of insights.

Question: How would approach the retake of a question you previously got wrong?

For instance, you took several quizzes of medium difficulty for the same topic. Then you decide to take a quiz with the questions you got wrong. Would you either log those question in the tracker or change the status of the previous answers?

Thanks once again!

Hello,

that's a very nice idea. Is there any chance there will be a google docs version (or any other online tool) or non Microsoft Excel based version?

I know that I can import xls spreadsheets in google docs, but when they are quite complex (i.e. graphs) they may be unusable.

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the log! Is it possible to also include the answer selection method and the "why I got this problem wrong" columns from the other logs in your log?
