D is wrong for a couple of reasons.
1. Separated "as in the way" is just wrong construction.
2. Older eaglets might- might what? The sentence is structure is such that you have no action for might. This might work if it were something like this "The younger ones do not separate from their parents, but the older ones might".

B. in the way that older eaglets might be -- Correct. Note that the verb in first part of comparison is "cannot be separated". The second part of the comparison begins with a relative clause "that". We have the subject "older eagles" and the verb "might be". Rest of the part of the comparison is understood as repeated (separated..)

C. such as in the way that older eaglets might be separated -- "such as" is incorrect when comparing two actions. Eliminate.

D. as in the way that older eaglets might -- If we apply ellipses here and repeat the verb from first part of the comparison, we may get "might not be separated" which would distort the meaning of the sentence. Eliminate.

E. as in the way of older eaglets -- Same as D. Eliminate.
