Can we say that in sentence A and B dont have an independent clause??? Please help..

I eliminated A and B for the reason mentioned above. I need to know whether my reasoning is correct or not.

I eliminated A and B for the reason mentioned above. I need to know whether my reasoning is correct or not.

First note that not only..but also is a conjunction, a correlative conjunction.

Now option A: There are 2 independent clauses in this sentence as shown below (the verb error in the first clause is corrected):

Independent clause 1: The systematic clearing of forests in the United States did create farmland (especially in the Northeast) and give consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture.
Independent clause 2: It caused erosion and very quickly deforested whole regions.

These 2 independent clauses are joined by a correlative conjunction not only.. but also.

Now option B: There are 2 independent clauses in this sentence too as shown below (The modifier error in the first clause and the subject error in the second clause are corrected):

Independent clause 1: The systematic clearing of forests in the United States did create farmland (especially in the Northeast), giving consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture.
Independent clause 2: It caused erosion and very quickly deforested whole regions.

Again these 2 independent clauses are joined by a correlative conjunction not only.. but also.

Therefore one cannot eliminate option A and option B on the ground that there is no independent clause. In each sentence there are 2 independent clauses joined by a correlative conjunction.

If D is the answer, what is the precedent of "it"?

Hey everyone,

This is a question in which if we blindly follow the standard rules, then the answer will be wrong. Have to understand the intended meaning.

Option C & E can be easily ruled out because of the violation of 'not only, but also' structure.

Option A & D, the 'it' has no proper antecedent.

Option C: Correct answer: 'The systematic clearing' was an advantageous process but it came with its own drawbacks.

"not only X but also Y" is a trap idiom here. Intended meaning here is to contrast positive and negative outcomes.

So, A,B,E out. C is fragment

D

D for me
Lets first concentrate on the meaning of the sentence..then we will look at the options...

Meaning: THE ACT OF The systematic clearing of forest(this is a noun phrase referring to the event as a whole) both created the farmland and gave the consumers the inexpensive furniture, but this act was also responsible for the erosion and deforestation.

Now lets consider each option...

A. Not only did the systematic clearing of forest in the United States create farmland (especially in the Northeast) and[Parallel marker] gave(The two Italicized verbs must be parallel, in other words, gave must be give) consumers relatively inexpensive house and furniture, but it also(must be but also)
Eliminated

B. Not only did the systematic clearing of forest in the United States create farmland (especially in the Northeast), which gave consumers(Wrong..the farmland did not give the furniture and houses to the consumers) relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but also
Eliminated

C. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States, creating farmland (especially in the Northeast) and giving consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but also
Italicized words not parallel to "caused"
Eliminated

E. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States not only created farmland (especially in the Northeast), giving consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture(The creation of farmalnd did not result in consumers getting inexpensive furniture), but it(must be BUT ALSO)
Eliminated

Leaves us with D..strengthening this option..let analyze this

D. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States created farmland (especially in the Northeast) and gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture(Independent Clause), (Dependent Clause)but it(this is the subject of this clause) also(There can be a but it also)--caused(present in the question)

Both the clauses are parallel, as their verbs are parallel, and but it also introduces a dependent clause. The two clauses are also connected properly[Independent Clause + , + but(subordinating conjunction) it also...whole regions(Dependent Clause)]. This also clearly reflects the intended meaning.

This question is similar to the Rabindranath tagore and gandhi question in structure. Q701 in OG2017.

Correct answer is D

Hi Sayant,

Could you please explain why 'also' is needed here !?

Without "not only", "also" is not mandatory. However it is not wrong to use it - it is then used independently, not as a part of a conjunction.

In option b, did is parallel to caused, so why can't we have 'b' as our answer?

The subject "The systematic clearing of forests" should be OUTSIDE the parralelsim structure:

The systematic clearing of forests not only did create, but also caused... this is correct. (subjuect outside).

However if you put the subject INSIDE the structure it should ideally be there in the second element (i,e, in but also) as well. (Remember the once out, twice in rule for parallelism).

Not only But Also construction is used when one talks about one extreme end of a thing for example air pollution not only effected population health but also effected plants and animals health.....negative impact of air pollution not only x but also y
Over here the question says that systematic clearing of forest if gives inexpensive houses, it also promote erosion...so one positive impact and other is negative impact. Therefore, one can rule out A and B.
C is not even a proper sentence
E is wrong because it says that farmland gives inexpensive houses. The correct option D clear this ambiguity by saying that clearing of forest (1) created farmland and (2) gave inexpensive houses BUT it also caused erosion and defrosted whole region. hope its clear now

Not only did the systematic clearing of forests in the United States create farmland (especially in the Northeast) and gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it also caused erosion and very quickly deforested whole regions.

A. Not only did the systematic clearing of forests in the United States create farmland (especially in the Northeast) and gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it also
- "create farmland" does not have the same verb tense as "gave consumers" -- incorrectly combining present w/ past tense.

B. Not only did the systematic clearing of forests in the United States create farmland (especially in the Northeast), which gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but also
- same error as in "A". also ", which" is incorrect/not needed here. there is nothing that need be directly tied to Northeast/farmland.

C. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States, creating farmland (especially in the Northeast) and giving consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but also
- verb tense incorrectly assumes "clearing", "creating", "giving" is all happening in the present tense; however, if you look after the underline, you see "caused" and "deforested" which is past tense.

D. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States created farmland (especially in the Northeast) and gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it also
- correct as is

E. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States not only created farmland (especially in the Northeast), giving consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it
- "created" and "giving" not in the same verb tense which is incorrect -- they need to be.

key here is to IDENTIFY THE LIST: 1) created; 2) gave; 3) caused; 4) deforested --> make sure these verbs are //

Kudos please if you find this helpful :)
