Can a participial modifier modify the noun of previous clause?
a participial (-ing / ed) phrase placed at the end of a clause CAN modify the entire preceding clause but can it also modify just the subject? I don't see any issues with B or D in example below.
It modifies the agent right? Why is B/D incorrect?
ScottTargetTestPrep if you could help, that would be appreciated. This is from 3.14.12.
Example:
Now sold throughout the Western world, China or Russia is likely where kombucha tea originated up to 2000 years ago.A. Now sold throughout the Western world, China or Russia is likely where kombucha tea originated up to 2000 years ago.
B.
Kombucha tea likely originated up to 2000 years ago in China or Russia,
now sold throughout the Western world. C. Now sold throughout the Western world, up to 2000 years ago is when kombucha tea likely originated in China or Russia.
D. Up to 2000 years ago,
kombucha tea likely originated in China or Russia,
now sold throughout the Western world.E. Kombucha tea, now sold throughout the Western world, likely originated up to 2000 years ago in China or Russia.
Now sold throughout the Western world, China or Russia is likely where kombucha tea originated up to 2000 years ago.C and E are likely candidates. Here's my take.
A. Now sold throughout the Western world, China or Russia is likely where kombucha tea originated up to 2000 years ago. - WRONG.
Seems China or Russia are sold now. Modifier issue.
B. Kombucha tea likely originated up to 2000 years ago in China or Russia, now sold throughout the Western world. - WRONG.
Same modifier issue meaning-wise as in A.
C. Now sold throughout the Western world, up to 2000 years ago is when kombucha tea likely originated in China or Russia. - WRONG.
'up to ... ago' seems to be modified by 'now.... world'.
D. Up to 2000 years ago, kombucha tea likely originated in China or Russia, now sold throughout the Western world. - WRONG.
There are two modifier issues that make this one wrong. One 'kombucha' is modified by 'up... ago' and two 'China or Russia' modified by 'now... world'.
E. Kombucha tea, now sold throughout the Western world, likely originated up to 2000 years ago in China or Russia. - CORRECT
Removing the modifier 'now ... world' that correctly modifies Kombucha tea does not affect the main sentence.
"Kombucha tea likely originated up to 2000 years ago in China or Russia."
IMO Answer E.
