OA is A. But per the definition of absolute value, to me both A & E are correct answers. Am I missing something here? I finding it hard to believe that OG could have such questions.

Hi, If you look at the diagram carefully you will see that the arrow at E is slightly less that 2 , therefore E<2 while the arrow at A is exactly at -2. abs(-2) =2. The correct answer is A.
Its just a trick Question to see how closely you read the question.

Good observation, but it's exactly 2 in the book.

It's question# 20 in problem solving section, if anybody would like to take a look at OG's explanation.

Come on guys.. this shouldn't be an eye test. I triple checked and don't see the lines off in my book. A is extactly pointing to -2 and E is exactly pointing to 2.

Is there an errata published for OG11?

Based on the attachment, E is just inside the 2 and A is right on -2.

But isn't absolute value always positive? Even if A was the farthest point, -2 becomes 2, correct?

Point E is slightly behind 2. But Point A is at 2 or nearby 2.
Hence A is the right answer

Of the five coordinates associated with points A, B, C, D, and E on the number line above, which has the greatest absolute value?

(A) A
(B) B
(C) C
(D) D
(E) E

Since the absolute value of a number indicates the distance of this number from zero, then we need to find a point which is farthest from zero. The farthest point from zero is A.
