Of the total number of copies of Magazine X sold last week, 40 percent

I am using the online version and it looks like there is a typo.

Statement 2 reads: The total number of copies of Magazine X sold last week at full price was $75,000.

This $ sign completely threw me off and I am pretty sure is a mistake.

To find X (the total number of copies).

Let p= number of magazines sold at full price

According to St 1:
1.5p = 112,500
p= 112,500/1.5
p= 75,000

In the question it is given that 40% of the total number of magazines were sold at full price. If "T" is the total number of magazines, then:
0.4T=75,000
T= 75,000/0.4
T= 187,500

Statement 1 is sufficient.

According to St 2:

p=75,000
In the question it is given that 40% of the total number of magazines were sold at full price. Hence,
0.4T = 75,000
T= 75,000/0.4
T= 187,500

Statement 2 is sufficient.

The answer is D.

Let 'c' be the total number of copies sold and k be the full price of each copy in dollar last week.
Given, number of copies sold at full price=40% of c=0.4c
So, 0.4c numbers of copies were sold at unit price k$.
Question stem:- # of copies, c=?

St1:- Last week, full price for a copy of Magazine X was $1.50 and the total revenue from full-price sales was $112,500.
So, k=1.5$
Total revenue=no of copies sold at full price*unit price
Or, 112500=0.4c*k=0.4c*1.5
Or, \(c=\frac{112500}{0.6}=187500\)

Sufficient.

St2:- The total number of copies of Magazine X sold last week at full price was 75,000.
Or, 0.4c=75000
Or, \(c=\frac{75000}{0.4}=187500\)

Sufficient.

It seems you've misunderstood statement (2). It's not stating that the total revenue from full-price sales was $75,000, but rather that 75,000 copies of Magazine X were sold at full price.

Let Full Price = f and The total number of copies of the magazine sold last week = T

f*1.5 =112500

0.4T = 112500/1.5

In DS we don't need to solve for, need to check if Statement 1 or 2 is suff

Hence Stat 1 is suff

(2) The total number of copies of Magazine X sold last week at full price was 75,000.

0.4T=75,000

We can find the value for T

Hence Stat 2 is suff

Number of copies = revenue from full price/ cost per magazine full price.

Number of full price copies/total copies = \(\frac{40}{100}\)

Sufficient.

Total Magazine N, Full price=0.40N

(1) 0.40N*1.50=112,500; Sufficient.

1. Lets say \(M\) copies of the magazine were sold last week
2. 40% percent were sold at full price - meaning \(0.4M\) were sold at full price
3. We need the value of \(M\) to solve the question

(1) Last week, full price for a copy of Magazine X was $1.50 and the total revenue from full-price sales was $112,500 - Sufficient
a. Provides us the unit price for the Magazine i.e. \($1.50\)
b. Total revenue is given by \(0.4M * 1.50 = 112500\)
c. We have one equation and one variable and hence we can find the value of \(M\)

(2) The total number of copies of Magazine X sold last week at full price was 75,000 - Sufficient
a. We get the equation \(0.4M = 75000\)
b. We have one equation and one variable and hence we can find the value of \(M\)

Hello Dear Bunuel
in statement 2. How can we make an equation, which 2 sides do not have equal unity, one is in terms of number and the other is $?
when I wrote statement to it was: 0.4 * N * P = 75000$ (since we don't have price of each, it's not Suff)
because the number of full price magazine should multiply by the prices of each to result in the total dollar value of them
WOULD YOU PLS HELP ME TO UNDERTSAND WHY MINE IN WRONG?

BUT i have to say that today I solved this question on GMAT™ Official Guide 2023-2024 Data Insights Review: Online Question Bank and statement 2 was written exactly as "The total number of copies of Magazine X sold last week at full price was $75,000."!
It had a $ sign and its answer was written as such : 2)Given that 0.4n = 75,000, it follows that ​n equals 75,000 over 0.4​; SUFFICIENT.
MAYBE THE $ IN THE STATEMENT WAS WRITEEN WRONGLY, OTHERWISE MY ANSWER WOULD BE INSUFF,

Context: Typo, ‘$’75000

My brain legit glitched and I had to come to GMATClub to confirm. Will be focusing more on the sentence clarity over signs and symbols hereafter. Anyways thanks, GMATClub.

I just went through this question in the 2023-2024 Data Insights Review book and put E as my answer to this question. The reason for doing so is because it never specifically states the price of the magazines, that were not sold at full price. I.e. If a magazine was not sold at full price, it could have been sold for $1 or $0.50, for all we know. For me, there was enough missing information, to make me deem this question impossible to answer, based on what we know. Am I missing something in the wording, or can somebody help me with this? Am I just overthinking it a bit too much? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Question is asking us the Total no. of copies of magazine sold last week .
Given : 40% of the magazines were sold at full price.

St-1 :

Given : Full Price for a copy of Magazine X = 1.50 $ ; Total revenue = 112.500 $
Assume no. of copies sold = Y

Revenue = Selling price * No. of items sold    (If you don't know this formula, memorise it. It will be helpful)

Put the above given info in formula :

112500 = 1.50 * Y ----> Y = 75000 copies sold 

Recollect this info from Question : 40% of the magazines were sold at full price.

So, (40/100) * Total no. of copies sold = 75000
So, from this you can find out Total no. of copies sold . 

Hence, St-1 is Sufficient.

St-2  :  

Given : The total number of copies of Magazine X sold last week at full price was 75,000.

Recollect this info from Question : 40% of the magazines were sold at full price.

So, (40/100) * Total no. of copies sold = 75000
So, from this you can find out Total no. of copies sold .  

Hence, St-2 is Sufficient.

Therefore , Answer D (Both statements alone are sufficient).
