In late 1997, the chambers inside the pyramid of the Pharaoh Menkaure at Giza were closed to visitors for cleaning and repair due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that the salt from the stone was crystallizing and fungus was growing on the walls.

I marked option "E" and it was correct. However, I have one doubt about this option. In the option E how does 'them' refer to the chambers but in choice "C" as per the explanation in Official Guide, "them" refers to the tourists? I went for choice "E" only because crystallizing was parallel to growing. But the pronoun"them" did create an element of doubt in my mind. Can someone please clarify my doubt?

(A) due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which
raised its humidity to such levels so that salt
from the stone was crystallizing

(B) due to moisture that tourists had exhaled,
thereby raising its humidityto such levels that
salt from the stone would crystallize

(C) because tourists were exhaling moisture, which
had raised the humidity within them to levels
such that salt from the stone would crystallize

(D) because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists
raising the humidity within them to levelsso high
as to make the salt from the stone crystallize

(E) because moisture exhaled by tourists had raised
the humiditywithin them to such levels that salt
from the stone was crystallizing

The difference between C and E is that C doesn't make sense since tourists do not exhale moisture. Moisture was exhaled by tourists thus raising humidity.

A & B ARE WRONG BECAUSE OF IMPRPOER USE OF PRONOUN IT
C IS WRONG BECAUSE OF USE OF WORD WOULD WHICH IS MAKING THE SENTENCE HYPOTHETICAL
D IS WRONG BECAUSE OF USE OF PARTICIPLE TENSE WITH RAISE
PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG

Firstly, you will soon receive a reply from one of the moderators asking you to follow the rules of posting. At least underline the error in the question for now.

Secondly, to clarify your doubt -

In C, 'because' is followed by a in independent clause with 'tourists' as the subject, which is why 'them' refers back to tourists- its immediate logical antecedent.
In E, 'them' has the permission to refer back to the subject of independent clause(moisture) or that of the main clause (chambers). Moisture will need an 'it' by virtue of its singularity, putting 'them' perfectly in place to refer back to 'chambers'.
"...exhaled by tourists...." is how your mind should think when searching for subject, because 'by tourist' is an adverbial phrase only to provide descriptive information about the verb - exhale.

Hope you are comfortable now. :)
