Often people lie not because they are morally corrupt but because under certain circumstances to tell a lie are simpler or less painful than to tell the truth.

Tested: Idioms, S-V
Correct Idiom - Not because ... But because

A. but because under certain circumstances to tell a lie are simpler or less painful - Correct Idiom. 'Lie' is singular, therefore, 'is' to be used and 'are' is incorrect

B. but because under certain circumstances it is simpler or less painful to tell a lie - Correct Idiom. Correct S-V agreement. Correct

C. but under certain circumstances to tell a lie is simpler or less painful - Incorrect Idiom

D. because under certain circumstances to tell a lie is simpler or less painful - Incorrect Idiom

E. but because under certain circumstances lying are simpler or less painful - Correct Idiom. 'Lying' is singular, therefore, 'is' to be used and 'are' is incorrect

Often people lie not because they are morally corrupt but because under certain circumstances to tell a lie are simpler or less painful than to tell the truth.

A. but because under certain circumstances to tell a lie are simpler or less painful - WRONG. Plural verb 'are' is wrong to singular phrase 'to tell...lie'.

B. but because under certain circumstances it is simpler or less painful to tell a lie - CORRECT. 'It' is used for 'to tell... lie' which is parallel to 'to tell a truth' in non-underlined part.

C. but under certain circumstances to tell a lie is simpler or less painful - WRONG. Second 'because' after 'but' is missing. Not because X .. but because Y is the idiom.

D. because under certain circumstances to tell a lie is simpler or less painful - WRONG. Again idiom issue. 'But' is missing.

E. but because under certain circumstances lying are simpler or less painful - WRONG. Plural verb 'are' is wrong. Also arallelism is lost for hrase after 'than'.

IMO Answer B.

Answer: B
C seems tempting but misses the word “because”. B simplifies the sentence and uses singular verbs.

The correct answer option is B because it presents similar elements in each part of the correlative conjunction 'not...but....' This answer option also compares the phrase 'to tell a lie' with the words 'to tell the truth' accurately.
There is a sub-verb agreement problem in options A and E, so they will go off. In the non-underlined part the words 'not because' are present, and the words 'but because' are required in the underlined segment. Hence, options C and D will be eliminated.

NOTES: "not bc…but bc" must be parallel; "under circms [s]…is [s]" sva; "to tell…than to tell" must be para.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Often people lie not because they are morally corrupt but because under certain circumstances to tell a lie are simpler or less painful than to tell the truth.

A. but because under certain circumstances to tell a lie are simpler or less painful

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The singular subject to tell does not agree with the plural verb are.

Remember that a subject in the form of To Verb is considered a singular subject.

B. but because under certain circumstances it is simpler or less painful to tell a lie

On the GMAT, grammar and logic override style. While this answer choice is not the most concise of the five answer choices, it is the only logical, grammatically correct answer.

C. but under certain circumstances to tell a lie is simpler or less painful

Incorrect.

While this answer choice corrects the original Subject Verb Agreement mistake and is grammatically correct, it is illogical. The omission of the word because creates an awkward meaningless sentence:

Often people lie not because they are morally corrupt but under certain circumstances to tell a lie are simpler or less painful.

D. because under certain circumstances to tell a lie is simpler or less painful

Incorrect.

While this answer choice corrects the original Subject Verb Agreement mistake and is grammatically correct, it is illogical. The omission of the word but creates an awkward meaningless sentence:

Often people lie not because they are morally corrupt because under certain circumstances to tell a lie are simpler or less painful.

E. but because under certain circumstances lying are simpler or less painful[/quote]

Incorrect.

While this answer choice is stylistically superior to the original sentence as it is more concise, it is is grammatically incorrect.

This answer choice repeats the original mistake. The singular subject to tell does not agree with the plural verb are.

Remember that a subject in the form of To Verb is considered a singular subject.

If there's no perfect answer choice, and you need to choose between a grammatically correct but redundant answer choice and a concise but grammatically incorrect answer choice, always choose the grammatically correct answer. Grammar overrides style on the GMAT. The correct answer can be stylistically flawed (that is, redundant or ambiguous) but it can never be grammatically incorrect.
