Re: Reelect Adams, and you will be voting for proven leadership in improvi [#permalink]
Please, evaluate my writing as well.

The following appeared as a part of an advertisement for Adams, who is seeking reelection as governor:
“Reelect Adams, and you will be voting for proven leadership in improving the state’s economy. Over the past year
alone, 70 percent of the state’s workers have had increases in their wages, 5,000 new jobs have been created, and
six corporations have located their headquarters here. Most of the respondents in a recent poll said they believed that
the economy is likely to continue to improve if Adams is reelected. Adams’s opponent, Zebulon, would lead our state
in the wrong direction, because Zebulon disagrees with many of Adams’s economic policies.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.

-----------
MY RESPONSE
-----------

The advertisement recommends reelecting Adams for better economic conditions of the state. In order to support its recommendation, the advertisement provides economic results under Adams leadership from past year and poll results showing respondents' trust in Adams policies and their belief that Adams' leadership will continue to bring economic improvement. Advertisement also argues that Zebulon (Adam's opponent) will not be able to bring economic reforms in the state because he disagrees with most of Adams's policies. However, the evidences and arguments presented in the advertisement are incomplete and seem misleading to some extent. That is why, advertisement as such is unconvincing and questionable.

For example, author provides the economic achievements of past one year to prove the effectiveness of Adams's policies. But, it is possible that the economic improvement in that particular year during Adams's term is mere coincidence. If other factors like change in federal economic policies, overall industrial boom etc. were responsible for these improvements in that one year, this will make the argument extremely weak. Therefore, it is crucial to provide the information on the policies adopted during Adams's term and how those policies helped to bring the economic reforms in the state.

Similarly, the information provided on poll results to prove the trust of voters in Adams's capabilities is incomplete. There is no information provided on statistics like percentage of total voters that participated in the poll, percentage of participants that responded to the poll questionnaire, percentage of respondents that favored Adams's reelection etc. These numbers are very important to conclude that majority of voters want to give Adams another chance for economic betterment.

Finally, the argument that, Zebulon would not make a good candidate for state's economy because he disagrees with most of the Adams's policies sounds unreasonable. This is because, it is generally true for every candidate to not agree with his opponent's policies and views. Therefore, the author may consider to include details of the policies that Zebulon wants to introduce and Adams's policies that he wants to revert. Also, an analysis on how Zebulon's policies may adversely affect the state's economy will help the advertisement to prove the pitfalls of Zebulon's economic plan.

In conclusion, the information provided in the advertisement is incomplete and lacks some crucial pointers to convince the voters to reelect Adams. As mentioned above, adding details of Adams's economic plan throughout his term and its effects on state's economy will create a strong basis of the argument. Along with that, presenting actual statistics of voters that believe in Adams's policies in the poll would prove the popularity of Adams's policies among voters. And, providing drawbacks of Zebulon's economic policies in contrast with benefits of Adams's policies will provide a well reasoned argument to prefer Adams over Zebulon.

Reelect Adams, and you will be voting for proven leadership in improvi [#permalink]
My GMAT exam is on 18th Oct. Could any expert check or score my essay? I really open for any recommend or suggestion

The author concludes that Adams, the current governor, should be reelected. The author’s line of reasoning is that over the past year alone, 70 percent of the state’s workers have had increases in their wages, 5000 new jobs have been created, and corporations have located their head quarters here. Also, most of the respondents in a recent poll said they believed that economy is likely to continue to improve if Adams is reelected. Moreover, Adam’s opponent, Zebulon, would lead our state in the wrong direction, because Zebulon disagrees with many of Adam’s economic policies. Theses arguments are based on several questionable assumptions for several reasons. In this essay, I will discuss and provide examples to support my viewpoint.

To begin with, the author’s conclusion that Adams should be reelected is based upon the assumption over the past year alone, 70 percent of the state’s workers have had increases in their wage, 5,000 new jobs have been created, and six corporations have located their headquarters here. However, the increases in the wage of the state’s workers may not be caused by the Adam’s action or economic policies. There may be many factors that can cause or affect the increase in the wage, new jobs having been created and six headquarters having located here. For example, economy in other states or areas may be much prosperous that increase operation costs or rental costs. To reduce the costs, those corporates move their headquarters from another state to here. Then, because there have been new headquarters, new jobs have been created. Perhaps, the global economy of almost countries in the world is going better and better, and does affect the economy in the state. Thus, the Adam’s economic policies may or may not be because location changed of the headquarters. To strengthen the author’s conclusion, the author would have to provide evidence that Adam’s economic policies do help pull those headquarters to establish in this state, create new jobs and increase the wage of state’s workers. In absence of this information, the author’s conclusion is weak and invalid.

Second, the author provides information that in a recent poll said most of the respondents believed that the economy is likely to continue to improve if Adam is reelected. However, there are no guarantee that the economy will continue to improve even if Adam is reelected. Also, the author doesn’t provide the method or information about the poll. It may be possible that the poll is biased. For example, the poll maker may send the poll or do this survey in some areas, channels or people that tend to elect Adam rather than Zebulon. Also, the number of people who did this poll may not be enough or be the majority of the voters. Thus, the poll may not be representative of all state’s voters. To solidify the author’s conclusion and reason, the author would need to provide evidence that the poll does represent the majority of the state’s voters and is not biased. Therefore, it may not reasonable to conclude that Adams, the current governor, should be reelected.

Last, given that Adam’s economic polices does improve the state’s economy, attracting the companies to move their headquarters from another state to this state, increasing the wage of the state’s workers and increasing new job. However, Adam’s economic policies may improve the state’s economy in short term and make a negative impact on the economy in long term. Even, Adam’s economic policies literally improve the state’s economy. Adam’s economic policies may not be the best or the most suitable for the state’s economy. Perhaps, Zebulon’s economic policies may be better than the Adam’s economic policies. Thus, it is improbable to conclude that Zebulon would lead the state in the wrong direction. To strengthen the author’s conclusion, the author would have to provide evidence that Zebulon’s economic policies are not good or Adam’s economic policies are better. Thus, it is not reasonable to conclude that Adam should be reelected.

All in all, to convince me that Adam should be reelected, the author would have to provide evidence that that Adam’s economic polices does improve the state’s economy, attracting the companies to move their headquarters from another state to this state, increasing the wage of the state’s workers and increasing new job, the poll does represent the majority of the state’s voters and is not biased, and that Zebulon’s economic policies are not good or Adam’s economic policies are better. In absence of this information, the author’s conclusion that Adam should be reelected is unpersuasive and unconvincing.
