7). One characteristic of top-performing sales organizations is that they have a tendency to have concentrated greater resources in the direction of a smaller, more careful selection of a number of important customers than is the case with other sales organizations.

a) that they have a tendency to have concentrated greater resources in the direction of a smaller, more careful selection of a number of important customers than is the case with
'they tend to' is better than 'they have a tendency to'. Simple verb forms are always preferred to complex nouns.
'to have concentrated' is wrong tense.

b) that they tend to concentrate more resources to a smaller, more careful selection of a number of important customers than toward
'than toward' gives a sense of meaning that top-performing organizations concentrate on more resources than they concentrate on other sales organizations.
consider, top-performing organizations concentrate on customer selection than do other sales organizations. This is right because we are comparing actions.
also, 'carefully selected number' is preferred to 'careful selection of a number' (verb form preferred to noun form)
'concentrate to' is unidiomatic.

c) that they have a tendency to concentrate more resources on a smaller, more careful selection of a number of important customers as opposed to
'they have a tendency' is wordy (as said in A)
'more careful selection' is wordy (as said in B)
'as opposed to' needs equivalent action. 'action as opposed to action' (as opposed to what other sales organizations do)

d) that they tend to concentrate more resources on a smaller, more carefully selected number of important customers than do
All the issues mentioned in A & B are resolved here.

e) the tendency to concentrate a greater amount of resources on a careful and small selection of a number of important customers as opposed to
'One characteristic is the tendency' is wordy (usage of noun form)
'amount of resources' is wrong (resources is countable)
'as opposed to' is doing a wrong comparison.

A run-on is a sentence that missies the conjunction or proper punctuation between two independent clauses (ICs). Where are two ICs here?

Also there is a thing known as co-ordinate adjectives. These are either two or more adjectives that modify the same noun. If you insert the word ’and’ and if you find that working out well wherein both the adjectives individually modify the noun, then you can even dispense with the ‘and’ and just be done with a comma. It won’t be a run-on then

Hi teaser

smaller modifies number of important customers; smaller (and more careful selection of a) number of important customers
