One way in which companies can increase their productivity is by making use of telecommuting. Many office workers waste a lot of time in their cars or other modes of road transport every morning trying to reach office, and a lot of them spend their day attending video conferences and typing emails, activities which could easily be carried out from the comfort of their homes. So it makes sense for companies to encourage their employees to use telecommuting services and work from home rather than travel to the office every day.

In order to evaluate the above argument, it would be useful to determine each of the following EXCEPT:

(A) Whether the cost of telecommuting will more than offset the increased productivity that comes about from its use.
(B) Whether the day to day work of most companies involves physical interaction amongst their employees.
(C) Whether a large part of the work of an average employee can be conducted using telecommuting services.
(D) Whether the use of telecommuting service will lead to increased revenues for the companies adopting this service.
(E) Whether the general traffic situation is likely to dramatically improve in the future.

Argument talks about how a company can increase the productivity of it's employees by making them work from home and avoid the wastage of time they get stuck in traffic commuting to and fro from work.

We are to evaluate the argument and this is an EXCEPT question. So all options that help in evaluating the argument are wrong and we are to choose the odd one out.

Let us look at the options..

(A) Whether the cost of telecommuting will more than offset the increased productivity that comes about from its use. WRONG - this has a direct impact on the effectiveness and success of the plan
(B) Whether the day to day work of most companies involves physical interaction among their employees. WRONG - again has a direct impact - if the employees need to constantly engage with each other in person, working from home is going to bring down the productivity.
(C) Whether a large part of the work of an average employee can be conducted using telecommuting services. WRONG - very much helpful in determining the outcome
(D) Whether the use of telecommuting service will lead to increased revenues for the companies adopting this service. CORRECT! - The argument does not talk at all about the total revenue but rather the productivity of the employees - now the increase in productivity might lead to increase in profits by either reducing total cost or increasing revenue but we cannot make a direct link.
(E) Whether the general traffic situation is likely to dramatically improve in the future.WRONG - if the traffic situation improves then the need of a solution will be lost and hence this too helps evaluate the argument!

Hence Option (D) is our choice.

straight D as the conclusion does not talk about revenue at all and hence it is totally irrelevant to the argument.

Well it certainly feels good to get a very tough question correct.
Imo D

This is an evaluate question so we have to find an option that would not have impact on the argument.

So A, B, C are out they are linked with conclusion about productivity in some or the other way.
If E is the case then the plan would fail.

So D is our answer. It links telecommuting service with revenue but we are not concerned with revenue.
