Otoplasty (ear cosmetic surgery) can reshape prominent or protruding ears. A plastic surgeon found that 76% of cosmetic ear surgery last year was performed on men. The plastic surgeon concluded that men's ears are, on average, more protruding and prominent than are women's ears.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the above conclusion?

The most common cosmetic surgery among men last year was performed on areas around the nose.
Over 50,000 people underwent otoplasty last year.
The number of people who undergo cosmetic surgery increases dramatically each year.
Men and women are equally inclined to undergo cosmetic surgery to correct aesthetic flaws.
Men's noses are, on average, more protruding and prominent than are

OE:
To solve this Conclusion Strengthening question, first break down the argument. The first two sentences are premises providing factual data. The last sentence uses the conclusion word concluded so it's the author's conclusion:

Premise A: otoplasty is used to fix protruding ears
+
Premise B: 76% of the otoplasties done last year were on men
=
Conclusion: men's ears protrude more than women's ears
Possible assumption: men and women both have the same approach to cosmetic surgery

You are required to find data that strengthens the conclusion that men's ears are more protruding than women's ears, on average.

Answer choice (D) confirms the argument's assumption by stating that women and men are equally likely to undergo cosmetic surgery.
People who underwent that procedure reflect the true percentage of those who have the problem.
Hence, men's ears are more protruding and prominent than women's are (76% men, 24% women).

Ear correction surgery, or otoplasty, is usually done to move prominent ears closer to the head or reduce the size of large ears. Very small ears, stretched earlobes or lobes with large creases and wrinkles may also be altered. Talk with your surgeon about the risks and benefits of otoplasty and what results you can expect.

Before you opt for otoplasty, some important issues to keep in mind include:

Even when only one ear appears to stick out (protrude), surgery is usually performed on both ears for a better balance.
Exact evenness (symmetry) isn’t likely. Similar to natural ears, the position of the ears after otoplasty will not match perfectly.
Think about the financial cost. Medicare and private health insurance may cover a few costs, but you must be prepared for some out-of-pocket expenses. Ask your surgeon for further details.
Smokers are at increased risk of complications. If you are serious about undergoing surgery, you should try to quit smoking.

Now i come to your main question of the difference between men and women in this surgery

During a 3-year period (2006-2008), 133 patients underwent operative correction of protruding ears in a private plastic surgery center. A total of 100 patients came for the follow-up visits, and the data of these patients were included in further analysis. The surgical technique consisted of scoring of the antihelical cartilage, suturing to recreate the fold of the antihelix (in the manner of Nachlas), and conchal setback procedure according to Furnas technique. According to suture material used for formation of new antihelix fold, the patients were divided into three groups: 4/0 Monocryl group (35 patients, 70 ears; Group 1), 4/0 PDS group (27 patients, 54 ears; Group 2), and 4/0 Mersilene group (38 patients, 7 ears; Group 3). Distances from the temporomastoid surface of the skull to the helix border in the upper, middle, and lower parts of the ear were measured before surgery and 6 months following surgery, and these measures were compared among groups. In addition, early and late complications were analyzed. There were 48 men and 52 women, and the median age was 20 years. The groups were matched for age, sex, and protrusion degree. No statistically significant differences were found comparing the groups of different suture material by skull-helical rim distance before operation. Comparison of skull-helical rim distance among groups after surgery showed that this distance in the medial and lower parts of the ear was the same in all groups, but this distance was smaller in the upper part of the ear in the Mersilene group; however, this difference was not statistically significant. Three patients in the Monocryl group (6 ears, 8.57%) and 3 patients in the PDS group (6 ears, 11.11%) had unsatisfactory aesthetic outcome because of recurrence of protrusion in the upper part of the ear. All of them underwent reoperation. In the Mersilene group, no recurrence was documented, but suture extrusion occurred in one patient (2 ears, 2.63%), and the sutures were removed. In our experience, formation of new antihelical fold with a 4/0 Mersilene suture resulted in the lowest rates of late complications. Using this type of suture material, some suture extrusions occurred, but this problem was easily solved by removing sutures. No recurrences of protrusion were documented in this group; therefore, no revision surgeries were necessary.

Option D eliminates the possibility that may be men are more interested in cosmetic surgery then women are, and therefore the number of men and women with prominnent ears are almost same, the increased propotion of men was due to the fact they are more inclined towards cosmetic surgery to remove aesthetic flaws !
