E. compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33 percent

my doubts are related to Ellipsis. Please clarify.

meaning- The author says that over 75 percent of the total energy produced in France comes from the nuclear power, while only 33 percent of the total energy produced in Germany comes from nuclear power.

A) Incorrect- while in Germany it is just over 33 percent.

1) According to me here IT is ambiguous.

while in Germany ( the energy produced from) it (nuclear power) is just over 33 percent.

while in Germany it(the energy) (produced from nuclear power) is just over 33 percent.

So it can refer to either the energy or nuclear power.

2)According to me there is ambiguity in comparison too.

while in Germany ( the energy produced from) it (nuclear power) is just over 33 percent.
this sentence doesn't convey the intended comparison, it doesn't say that 33 percent of the total energy produced in Germany.

while (the energy produced ) in Germany (from) it (nuclear power) is just over 33 percent.
This is the intended meaning.

Option B) compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent.

even this is ambiguous.

if we don't use ellipsis.
The energy produced in France is compared to Germany.(this is incorrect)

with ellipsis.
compared to ( the energy produced from nuclear power in ) Germany, which uses just over 33 percent.

Even this doesn't state the intended meaning but my point is that there are 2 comparisons possible.

DOUBT- is this all correct ?? or have i gone too far with Ellipsis. am i missing something.

And can we use that the comparison is illogical or incorrect because we didnt use ellipsis as i did in option B)

if we don't use ellipsis.
The energy produced in France is compared to Germany.(this is incorrect)

Hi Sid,
Thank you for posting you query here. :)

Your analysis seems correct to me. In option A, the ambiguity in comparison arises because the reference of "it" is not clear. So, the pronoun error causes the ambiguity in comparison also.

In option B again, I'll say you have clearly understood both the cases, and analyzed them correctly. However, you need not to consider the second case (with ellipsis). If you focus on the ellipsis questions in GMAT, generally a preposition or a verb is omitted to bring the ambiguity in the meaning. You won't usually see long phrases such as "the energy produced from nuclear power in" omitted.

Hope this helps. :)

A) Incorrect- while in Germany it is just over 33 percent.

1) According to me here IT is ambiguous.

Not just ambiguous, it actually does not have any referent.

Quote:
while in Germany ( the energy produced from) it (nuclear power) is just over 33 percent.

while in Germany it(the energy) (produced from nuclear power) is just over 33 percent.

As e-gmat mentioned, there is really no case of ellipsis here. The main reason why A is incorrect is because of incorrect usage of it. It is also important to understand that the left hand side of the sentence does not talk at all about energy produced from nuclear power. It is talking about energy derived from nuclear power. So, we cannot assume that it refers to energy produced from nuclear power.

Quote:
Option B) compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent.

with ellipsis.
compared to ( the energy produced from nuclear power in ) Germany, which uses just over 33 percent.

Again, for the reason cited above, we cannot assume this, because left hand side does not mention energy produced from nuclear power.

The easiest way to eliminate B is that it says: Germany uses just over 33 percent; nothing about the usage is mentioned or implied in the original sentence.

Whats is compared here?
>>the energy produced from nuclear.

1 while in Germany it is just over 33 percent

2 compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent
>> Germany and "the energy prod from nuclear" are compared.Wrong
3 whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany

IMO this is a question with a lot of subtle traps. Let me explain my reasoning for the answer I selected.

The orginal sentence
Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France derives from nuclear power, while in Germany it is
just over 33 percent

The meaning of the sentence- France is able to derive more than 75% of its energy needs from nuclear power. This fact has to be compared with the percentage of nuclear power derived in Germany.

A. while in Germany it is just over 33 percent - It can refer to nuclear power, or energy produced in Germany. It is unclear as to whether Germany uses only just over 33% of the total energy it produces and the rest may be exported or maybe unused , lost etc. or whether Germany uses only just over 33% of the nuclear energy it produces and the rest is sold or unused or lost. So the usage of it is unclear.

B. compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent - just over 33 percent refers to what? Again it may refer to a lot of things as mentioned in the explaination given in the previus case

C. whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany - This choice makes a clear comparison between the percentage of nuclear energy produced in France and Germany. We can keep it and look at other choices

D. whereas just over 33 percent of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany - comes from nuclear power may mean that a country may produce X KJ of nuclear energy and from that country just over 33% of nuclear energy is imported into Germany i.e. the nuclear power mentioned in the choice may or may not be produced in Germany

E. compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33 percent - Again, this sentence has a similar meaning error as in choice D. Energy from nuclear power in Germany may mean that the energy is produced in some other country and Germany uses it.

Therefore, choice C is the correct answer.

I'll just add few things:

Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France derives from nuclear power, while in Germany it is
just over 33 percent.

B. compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent
in this answer choice the power... is compared to Germany. this is incorrect.

D. whereas just over 33 percent of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany
33% of the energy - which energy? produced? imported?

E. compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33 percent
comparison error
energy from nuclear power - over 33% what?

A. while in Germany it is just over 33 percent

While - Used to mention , point of time in past

It - Can refer to Energy Production in France / Nuclear Power

B. compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent

Compared to = Used to compare two Di similar items

C. whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany

Looks tall , dark and handsome...

Whereas , correctly contrasts the situation of France and Germany.

D. whereas just over 33 percent of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany

Which energy ?

E. compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33 percent

Compared with = Used for comparing similar things but this is incorrect , because the sentence presented above relates to a contrasting relationship , not comparison...

Could you please help me understand structural parallelism in option C which is the correct answer. Though, I agree the option C is the best option as far as meaning is concerned, i am still not sure if both the clauses in option C are parallel.

Hi,

Look at the sentence structure below

 Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France derives from nuclear power,
 whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany

The clauses in option C are indeed parallel.

The entities being compared are “energy produced in France” and “energy produced in Germany”.

Observe the verb-ed modifiers “produced in France” and “produced in Germany”.

They appropriately add relevant information to “energy” in both the clauses.

The clauses are essentially comparing relevant entities without any grammatical issues.

The sentence conveys the meaning unambiguously. (Unlike Option D, where the “energy” in the second element is ambiguous).

Therefore there are no parallelism issues in Option C.

However, “the energy” in the underlined portion of Option D refers back to the already mentioned energy in the option i.e. “energy produced in France”. This gives the incorrect meaning that “just over 33% of the energy produced in France comes from nuclear power in Germany.”

This is not the intended meaning of the sentence.

Hence Option D is incorrect.

Hope this helps! :)

Regards,
Krishna

in choice D, "in germany" can modify total preceding clause and is logic and grammatical but the problem is the paralelism. we have "energy produced in France" at the begining , we should have "energy produced in Germany" at the end.

so, this situation is hard and not basic, I think. in the test room , making a dicision on two choices C and D is hard and time consuming. in the test room, we have to use intuition and go on.

hard one.

The non underline portion of the sentence means that out of total energy produced in France, over 75% comes from nuclear power. So, we need to select the answer choice that makes the correct comparison(apples to apples or mangoes to mangoes but not apples to mangoes). C says out of total energy produced in Germany, over 33% is nuclear power.

(C) whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33% of the energy produced in Germany

Choice D change the meaning of sentence. It means that 33% of the energy which refers to energy produced in France come from nuclear power in Germany. It seems illogical. Choice E is more concise.

The most important key for this problem is focus on the meaning of the sentence. Actually, before this time, I faced this sentence and choose correct one. In this time, I neglect it little bit to go out of track to choose choice D. Fortunately, my second thought lead me to remain on track.. If you stick to the meaning, you will keep on track.

Try to view choice D as a stand-alone sentence (clause).

Hi mvictor,

I have a slight difference in opinion about your explanation of option 1 :) . The comparison between in France and in Germany does not seem to have any error. The problems lies in the following:

Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France is compared with it in Germany . The comparison between the prepositional phrases in France and in Germany does not have problem as such. The problem is in the comparison between Over 75 percent of the energy produced and it. The pronoun it by virtue of parallelism refers to over 75 percent of energy. Therefore the second part of the sentence effectively becomes .....in Germany over 75 percent of the energy produced is just over 33 percent. This sentence, as you would understand, is thus meaningless. :)

1) The subject of the sentence is "Over 75 percent of the energy" so it being the subject of the next clause will be replaced with "Over 75 percent of the energy".

1 while in Germany it is just over 33 percent
-> this option is incorrect because of the point # 1

2 compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent
-> Meaning of the sentence is 75% of energy requirement is fulfilled by nuclear in France and Germany uses 33%. 33% of what is not clear at all.

3 whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany
-> Correct

4 whereas just over 33 percent of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany
-> meaning appears to be that nuclear power is so inefficient that it can only produce 33% of energy but in option C) Nuclear energy accounts for 33% of the total energy. The meaning is quite clear in Option C)

5 compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33 percent
33% -> Defines Germany or Nuclear power -> Absurd Meaning

A) while in Germany it is just over 33%
Wrong:- "It" is ambiguous. Does it refers to nuclear power or to the energy produced.

B) compared to Germany, which uses just over 33%
Wrong:- Energy is compared to Germany.

C) whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33% of the energy produced in Germany
Correct:- Correctly compares "75% of the energy produced in France" to "33% of the energy produced in Germany"

D) whereas just over 33% of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany
Wrong:- Ok !! This is the funniest of all options. To understand why it is wrong you will have to read the entire sentence.

E) compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33%.
Wrong:- Again "it" has no logical antecedent. What is 33% - "energy" or "nuclear power" ?

This makes us feel that WE ARE TALKING ONLY ABOUT FRANCE'S ENERGY. FRANCE MAKES IT OWN ENERGY AND TAKES 33% ENERGY FROM GERMANY.

E) compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33%.
Wrong:- Again "it" has no logical antecedent. What is 33% - "energy" or "nuclear power" ?

A) while in Germany it is just over 33%
B) compared to Germany, which uses just over 33%
C) whereas nuclear poweraccounts for just over 33% of the energy produced in Germany
D) whereas just over 33% of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany
E) compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33%.

I have the following doubts with these questions:

a) In choice C, the subject in the first part of the comparison is "over 75 percent of the energy produced in France", while the subject in the second part is "nuclear power". How can these be parallel? Also, based on the explanations of other questions, the compared clauses should be parallel in structure, so the second clause should be something like "(whereas) just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany comes from nuclear power". As you can see, now both structures are similar and the things that are compared are logically parallel (percentage vs. percentage). I don't understand, how C can be correct.

If you see choice E, my analysis would be correct. There, the sentence compares "over 75 percent of the energy produced in France" vs. "energy from nuclear power in Germany": not parallel.

b) In choice E, the OE says that "it" is ambiguous, and Ron Purewal (MGMAT) mentions that "it" doesn't have an antecedent. But I think that "it" refers to "the energy from nuclear power in Germany". I think that there is no problem with "it". If you replace the pronoun for that noun, it works.

Please, your help with this problem.

1 while in Germany it is just over 33 percent
2 compared to Germany, which uses just over 33 percent
3 whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany
4 whereas just over 33 percent of the energy comes from nuclear power in Germany
5 compared with the energy from nuclear power in Germany, where it is just over 33 percent

Over 75 percent of the energy produced in France derives from nuclear power, whereas nuclear power accounts for just over 33 percent of the energy produced in Germany

(C) is correct - Its parallel ...
